Given that I have never done any spearfishing and don't want to spend too much money, I'm considering starting out with a pole spear. How do you determine what length of spear to get, is it based on your height or the type of fish your going after?

I am 6'2" and will be hunting (or at least trying to :t ) in lakes with 6-8 feet of visibility if that helps.

I prefer a long pole spear for open water and a short one for shooting among rocks. A three prong paralyzer tip works fine on up to 10 lb fish. Use a slip tip for biger fish. Some guys put a 20 ft float line when hunting with a slip tip.
the cheap brands brake so be careful with your purchase.
