I would definitely not be asking for a 'poll' to discredit what you do.

Don't take it personally Lee (/guys), in some countries night diving is illegal so the discussion goes well beyond individuals and their preferences.

No personal offence taken. This thread however does bear relevance to my personal style of diving and thus I feel obligated to furnish fellow spearos with my experiences and opinions regarding the said subject.

Obviously it is a little disheartening when myself and my Dorset crew have put in many many freezing hours and had some great captures these past few months; keeping the forum alive and full of pics and detailed reports.

Especially Nobby's fantastic double figure bass! Nobby deserves ever bit of credit for that fish; I didn't want this poll/thread to distract from the fact that it is a capture of a lifetime caught submeresed in water with a spear and without the aid of breathing apparatus as stated in the rules for FOM.

I am of the opinion that if the 'goal posts' are moved now after running several comps, it would open a whole can of worms...... would a day dive during a total solar eclipse count? Lol...just kidding :) but u can see what I'm getting at.

Again no offence taken, and respect out to all aspects of spearfishing.

To me it seems a little unfair to exclude the night caught fish now after it being fine for so long. At the end of the day any one of us could get down to the coast after dark and do it, but most of us don't, and the reasons for it I'll bet aren't because it's too easy and unsporting.
I'd be lying if I said that I've not been inspired to try night diving since seeing their catches but I'm yet to actually do it, it takes more than most are willing to put in to get into the sea at night, and for that alone I think it should be allowed on fom.
And if you can't beat em, join em!

This poll was not necessarily set up to decide if night fishing would or would not be allowed in the db compertisions but to gauge a general feel of our members opinions.

In my opinion night sperfishing is potentially very dangerous & good luck to the guys who favour this aspect of the sport but I also feel it is so much easier to actually spear fish at night.
This fact puts a more difficult perspective on whether nigh diving should be encouraged on the forum because we dont want to be responsible for some guy who is not very confident taking the chance just because night time fish are doing so well in the compertisions?

My brother OMD, who the compertisions are dedicated too, was a very keen night diver & a master of the pursuit.

I honestly dont know how he would feel about this discussion!

Im glad u said that foxfish. Wen u hav said to us guys in the past about your brother was a keen night spearo. That is exactly wot i was getting at wen i stated that he was.
On the points u hav raised i fully understand some ppls view on night diving. Also i for 1 dont incourage doing it in a recless manner as it is dangours and risky. I always tell ppl to dive places they know ect. I know myself and lee dont practice this as we do try new spots of a night but we both hav had hours on end of phone calls checking places out plannig dive entry exit ect. Also saftey issues . Ie the boundarys around us were no shooting at a fish no matter the size ect. I can let lee expand on that as he explanes stuff far more easy than me. I do dive both day and night tho and i do enjoy my day dives more for obv reasons. But with 4kids that r keen to hav my every min it is hard to get in so diving is addapted. Until now my best fish/catch was act caught in the day and more bass has been caught in the day rather than at night. I dont rubbish things said about night diving but its not always the case that it is easier to spear fish at night. But there is some elliment of truth in it. The way it is made out by some is that fish r asleep and r there in the masses wen thats not the case. I cant eva recall 1 time i hav held bottom on a night dive and hav fish investigate like in the day.

In my opinion I believe that night fishing requires a great deal of skill, technique, experience and of course risk. It is also an awesome experience, fishing the same spot at night can look totally different to the day. Having been on many scuba night dives I can say the sea really does come alive after dark and is a totally different place!
I spearfish for both sport and the pot. I believe it to be equally sporting as a different set of skill and knowledge must be applied.
It is not just a case of buying a torch swimming along for a bit coming across a fish and spearing... Spotting a fish is only half of it. It then takes time, patience and stealth (much the same as day spearing) to wait for the right opportunity for a clean shot.

Again, as mentioned above, this is only my personal experience and take great interest in reading others views and opinions.

Also night dives have provided fish for the table during the winter months when there are no fish around during the day. It shows to newbies and other doubters that fish can be caught all year around if you are willing to adapt your hunting method and put in the hours. For that reason and all the others explained I also think it would be unfair to stop night caught fish being entered into competitions, especially this late into the season.

I also think night caught fish should be included in the FOM. Although I have not dived at night I would do so if I could find a buddy that would dive at night.
I think that there is a great deal of skill involved and also guts to get in at night.
I have also hunted with lurchers at night (when it was legal) and often there was a similair thought that this was easier, but this also has its skills.
I would be delighted to have shot that Bass that Nobby had day or night and have asked Nobby about how to night dive, suitable guns etc. Hunting at night with a dog you see a lot more out, so if there is more fish out at night why would you not hunt them then? People fish with rods at night.

People fish with rod and line at night as fish are more active then.

None of us have ever come across a sleepy or holed up fish at night.

I have shot several 5lb plus bass in the day holed up or asleep. I have also had an 8lb 3oz mullet in the day that was asleep hiding under a rock.

Night time does bring better fish into shallow water (if u know where to look) but they are very skitish.

Until recently I have never got anywhere near a GH bream at night; I've seen them, but they absolutely hate torches and they move FAST. One of my targets this year was a night captured bream as this (in my opinion) is more difficult. I know spots where I can get GH bream in 2m during the day whilst they are pre occupied with feeding.

I will say that if u know where to look,, there are more fish active at night.

It will take a while to adapt your diving and tune your eyes into night fishing. As with any aspect of spearfishing there are inherent dangers, but u do also eliminate a few I.e. blackouts (if u fish from surface) and boat traffic.

I night dive mainly for the extra thrill and challenge that it brings.

If u do night dive....then you really need to trust your buddy as it is frighteningly easy to shoot one and other by accident.

If there are two of us we have strict rules:

Fish side by side ( almost shoulder to shoulder) and travel in the same single direction.

Guns angled downwards and infront at all times.

Never swing around to shoot a fish. ...even if its a double! !

Never leave your buddy.

If he sees it first....then its his fish! Unless it head directly for your buddy, then u let him take it.

If u work deeper water...then one up, one down.

This is to name just a few vital rules that we follow.
