Pure spear hunting

I don't post here often, but the few times that I have it has been in order to inquire about one of the challenges that I set for myself.

Yes, I love challenges, and I think I found a good one for this summer.

Pure spear hunting, or hunting with a spear that is not mechanically propelled. I am thinking of having a spear with a trident head made for me, and see exactly what I can spear by hand.

It's probably been done extensively in ages past, but that is no reason for me to not try it.


-I am thinking small fish that live on the bottom or in small caves are the way to go. What do you think?

-I a also wondering about the lenght the spear should be.

I spear lots of flatfish (bottom dwellers) and cave fish, even small groupers with a hand spear. it is quite a challenge and a lot of fun. start with flounder.

so how long is your spear amphibious, and what kind of tip does it have?

5 to 7ft long with a multiprong or trident tip. mostly now I only use if for flonder at night. it;s good fun.

the older guys down here (barbados) do that, they call em hand grains, basically just about a 4-6 foot long piece of metal with a point on one end, no barb, no flopper, no multi-tip, and a ring on the other end so that they could hold it. when i was younger i went with one of my dads friends, my end tally? 0 fish, 1 crab. (i felt so proud of my crab) he, however, had 2 large parrotfish (i still think some spearo was out there and gave them to him or something, i couldnt even get within 15 feet of one) 2 flounder, 3 big crabs (i didnt feel so proud of my crab after seeing his) and a nice pompano that he said swam a bit too close to him... i think that if you have the patience, you can get the results, and hey it can only make your speargun hunting a lot better, good luck with it and show some pics of your gear and your results
