I am surprised that roller guns are not more popular? Anyhow I am building one at the moment. A 750 with 275 bands, so I will find out if they have any pitfalls first hand? It seems to me, although DB is a fantastic source of info sometimes the only ansaw it experience.
Hi Foxfish, have you been working on the rollergun - or has your boat fully occupied you of late? Re. your question why they are not more popular - a couple of possibilities occur to me:
- less simple that a regular gun (seems like we sometimes refine things down to essentials over time...although once you've done that, I guess there is only one way to go though :D)
- more moving parts - more complex to build, more costly and more to go wrong.

I love the simplicity of regular rubber guns. Although I must admit I am intrigued by the roller guns -- as they are not that much more complex. BTW I read a comment by someone that claimed bulk rubber muzzles have a small advantage because they have that additional loop of rubber wrapped around the muzzle which they reckoned comes into play during use. If true (it seems reasonable), the effect would probably be like a mini roller gun effect.

Tomorrow morning I'll go fishing with my 75 and my 60 (N/W wind and evening storm promise terrible viz :-(

I am thinking that if I get a second gun I would probably only take one into the water at a time (e.g. perhaps short for south coast/gulleys/poor viz, long for Cornwall/Guernsey/clear water/open water) -- the second would be a source of spares and a way to deal with changing conditions from day to day. Spaghetti -- do you take both out with you & swap between them? Is your 60 Commanche equipped with trident tip?

Pav, have you had a chance to use your new 75 yet?

Mr X,

The water here is still very poor viz. Calmer conditions for the time being so may clear? I've checked some of the surf cam further west (fristal etc) and the water looks clear. I know the fishermen are catching Bass now along this coast.

I'll let you know what I think of the 75 when it gets wet! I may be forced to take a trip down to cornwall if it doesn't improve here.

Yes & yes, the gun is progressing & the boat has been in the water but is back home to sort some teething problems.

I almost always take two: a 75 or a 100 for open water and ambush (which one depends on visibility or "terrain"), and a shorter one hanging under my buoy: it's the comanche 60 or a short pneumatic, that I use only if I find interesting caves or cracks on the reef (or for second shot on big fish if I ever catch any).
The short comanche has threaded shaft and I use it mostly with trident. But when visibility is very poor (say less than 2 meters) I screw-in a small harpoon with flopper and use it as the primary gun.
--In Italy it's a normal habit to hang a short gun under the float, because cave hunting is a very popular technique and cave fish are very popular for dinner..
