Hi,
I know a lot of people have quotes as their signatures, but I was just wondering if anyone had any favourite quotes about freediving, the ocean etc that aren't signatures, or ones from people who don't have signatures.

I don't have one becuase i guess I haven't read much...enlighten me! :)

Some quotes from poetry about the sea and similar things...

Roll on, thou deep and dark blue Ocean - roll!
Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee in vain;
Man marks the earth with ruin - his control
Stops with the shore.

Lord Byron, The Ocean
(Sadly not true now)

Calm or convulsed, in breeze, or gale, or storm,
Icing the pole, or in the torrid clime
Dark-heaving - boundless, endless, and sublime.

Lord Byron, The Ocean

...plunging down
Into their green and glassy gulfs, and making
My way to shells and seaweed, all unseen
By those above, till they waxed fearful; then
Returning with my grasp full of such tokens
As showed that I had searched the deep

Lord Byron, With a Swimmer's Stroke

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied

John Masefield, Sea-fever

Weed in the wave, gleam in the mud -
The dark fire leaps along his blood;
Dateless and deathless, blind and still,
The intricate impulse works its will.

Rupert Brooke, The Fish
(That was my signature for a while)

Branquias quisiera tener,
porque mi quiero casar.
Mi novia vive en el mar
y nunca la puedo ver.

I wish I had gills
Because I want to marry.
My girlfriend lives in the sea
And I can never see her.

Rafael Alberti, Marinero en tierra
(For those who don't understand Spanish, I translated it)

Swimming without a roof over your head is now a mildly subversive activity, like having an allotment, insisting on your right to walk a footpath, or riding a bicycle.

Roger Deakin, Waterlog

I can find more if anyone wants... :)

Hi

My all time favourite freediving quote comes from Jacques Mayol -

"Freediving is about silence...the silence that comes from within.."
Jacques mayol

Jeff

i have abunch of random quotes:

you enter the water you play by the rules of the seas

I believe blue water hunting and spearfishing makes people aware of the predators and wildlife and is highly educational, you have to understand the workings of predator and prey relationship before you enter that realm

it's a place of danger, wild animals and high adventure and we need to keep it that way

The world of the ocean is full of surprises and be ready for its surprises and enter it at your own risk

Seeing death as the end of life is like seeing the horizon as the end of the ocean.

for whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea

A man is never lost at sea...

Fish: "so you are from the sea?, Tell me, What is the big blue really like?
Nemo: "err, it big and its blue"

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air…

The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible

What's important in life is not how many breaths we get to take but those moments that take our breath away

From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free.

Sometimes we are lucky enough to know that our lives have been changed, to discard the old, embrace the new, and run headlong down an unmutable course.
It happened to me...
on that summers day when my eyes were open to the sea.

Water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans.

The happiness of the bee and the dolphin is to exist. For man it is to know that and to wonder at it.

Know your limits, but never accept them

It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem.

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always believed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, war and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done is muck about in the water having a good time.

But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons.

i hope some other people can add some more

Wow, that's a lot of quotes so far, I would love to see some more. I like the one about the dolphins and the humans, reminds me of the Douglas Adams book "So Long And Thanks For All The Fish" book from the hitchhikers "trilogy". and the Jacques Mayol about silence is a classic. Would be great to see some more on here, I'll have a look around myself :)

"Be like water, my friend."
- Bruce Lee

Or in full:
"Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend."
- Bruce Lee

Some poetry and books which I like, I haven't written them out because they would take up too much space, but if anyone wants them and can't find them I will try to help.

I will add to this list if I find any more.

Poems:
Fishes' Heaven by Rupert Brooke
The Midnight Skaters by Edmund Blunden

Books:
Waterlog by Roger Deakin

not as profound as the above but
I'd give my left arm to be ambidextous and my right to be able to spell it.
I used to use cliches all the time but now I avoid them like the plague.
Drink like John Wayne, Whisky or nothing.

"Hey, this man is not breathing. Don't people usually breathe?"
Homer Simpson

You might have already seen my sig, but it's one of my favourite quotes!
Also:
“From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth.
But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free.”

Not freediving specific, but water-related:
"From space, the planet is blue
from space, the planet is the territory
not of the human, but of the whale."

"Whales play, in an amniotic paradise.
Their light minds shaped by buoyancy,
unrestricted by gravity,
somersaulting,
Like angels, or birds;
like our lives, in the womb."

"You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore."

I thought to myself, "God is going to test humans in order to show them that they are animals."
- Ecclesiastes 3:18

Among all of the mammalian species, there is only two groups of species that shed their fur; aquatics and underground dwellers. Among all the mammal species, there is only one group that shed their fur and produce a subcutanous layer of fat, and that is the aquatics.
- Elaine Morgan, New Scientist 1984

Indeed, there is a zero episiotomy rate in the waterbirth literature.
