Got out of their way - why? I mean if they are harmless?

I didn't know that at the time so I felt it was prudent.

That's what I've read about then - they don't have stingers (evolutionary difference between them and stingrays) and have no natural predators so they apparently aren't naturally aggressive and just eat plankton and such. I assume they could mess you up if you agitated them but I would personally swim around them without concern. Other rays not so much.

they are not dangerous at all! as a kid i traveled around aus for a year with my family. we used to swim down with them and jump off piers on top of them ( i know thats probs not the best idea) but the are very beautiful and they know it. they almost always put on a show by cruising along the sandy surface flapping there massive wings.
Just dont annoy it too much and it defiantly wont harm you !

Great pics! Where were these taken? I never see those types of rays in costa rica - just mantas for some reason. I know the others are out there but they don't care for my local reefs I guess.

I took these photos (actually videos) of them at Looe Key Reef in the Keys on on of my awesome jet ski snorkel tours...for those that dont know at mm24 in the Keys i have a Jet Ski Rental...here is one of the videos i took. The first Spotted Eagle Ray is in that video while the second and third are in a video i have yet to edit. Enjoy...but please dont shoot them with anything BUT a video camera.
