If your training focusses on hypercapnic resistance (and 'denying' contractions) then it is only in these extreme conditions (no warm-up, high partial pressure) that you will feel any hypercapnic contractions.
Interesting. What I am doing now in training is to try and build up CO2 tolerance and delay or prevent contractions. If I can do that, my times and distances should improve a lot.

I'll post what happens. :)

Hi Will,

It is indeed like Jorg said. But if you still have problems, I also have the video here so I can do it for you if it does not work. Just drop me a PM. Also if you have limited bandwith (and putting a popular video on you site can generate gigabytes , trust me) I can host if for you if you want.

Pitty nobody filmed your perfect training dive the day before. Was a great thing to whitness from the water. Pleasure meeting you !!!

I used a Cressi Minima for the attempt, and don't have any trouble equalising this down to 81m handsfree.
Are you doing a single mouthfill? What depth do you do your mouthfill? Do you have to wear the strap rather tight to avoid air leaking from the mask?

I have always performed handsfree but when I do a mouthfill, for dives deeper than ~40m, I find that the pressure of the frenzel will cause air to leak out of my mask. I have tightened my mask somewhat but not to the degree that this would stop, since doing so would decrease the volume of the mask (sphera). I used the pressure, that causes leaking, to hold the eustacian tubes open as well, instead of trying to do so with my muscles. Maybe that is different for you?

So far, I can only handle just over 1/2 volume change with a mouthfill which translates to depth changes such as 1-10m, 25m-60m, 35m-80m.

Cheers,

Tyler

Hi Tyler,
I prefer to take small, non-agressive mouthfills, and can do so even at 70m+ (1/2hr/day of lung stretching helps with this). I am lucky to have very cooperative Eustachians, and almost any amount of mask pressure will suffice. I have never tried a Sphera, but it seems that everyone is recommending them these days.

What type of lung stretching do you practice? Do you simply suck in the diaphragm even at those depths to bring up air? Or do you require a more complex body motion?
