Hi,

I'm going with my family to Rhodos and I wonder if somebody have knowledge of diving sites there.

I search depths bigger than 15m near the shore. The deeper the better :)

Hello Peter

Places like Faliraki or Afantou are only for the family. The is Kalithea Bay where I remember the was ca 22-23 meters. They have a Blue Hole to :-) Take a look att...

I'm going to visit Rhodos on 20 April. I'd like to spearfish there. Can you recommend any specific sites? Any local clubs/groups/english speaking speros in the area?

was a pretty good place to take a bit of a breather, even if more expensive than the rest of Greece we travelled. Taxi fares were fixed at about four times those in Athens. The first few days at the hostel we took advantage of the location, and went looking for the best bays for snorkelling according to the web. We visited Lindos via a 50 km bus trip packed with tourists, which is a beautiful traditional village that has now become so popular the British have moved in and prices for small houses were around a million bucks, whereas mansions on hills were closer to five million. St Pauls Bay at Lindos was picture postcard, and also deep and clear enough we saw our first Freediving Academy. The sport is popular enough in the Mediterranean seas that, If my source was correct, about 70 serious freedivers managed to drown themselves there each year, which makes sense when you realise that on the deeper dives it takes longer to ascend than descend, so bad luck if you misjudge and there is nobody who can save you (and we won´t talk about the depth-induced heart attacks for divers who get really serious). We reckon this academy must have been a bit serious because the group nearly left the region of the bay, presumably for deeper water but maybe so that unlike us they didn`t have to worry about, among others, big glass-bottomed tourist boats that sped into and out of the bay and seemed to put the onus on the swimmers and divers to get out of their way. I reckoned that if they slowed down their passengers would have had a better trip, because they would have at least watched people like us snorkelling and diving which would have compensated a bit for the fact that this day pretty well everything was attracted to the bay except fish.

No, but I'm here now and its really nice. I saw a dolphin out of my room window and dived at my hotel beach. 30m from the shore - 25m depth.
Saw a school of small fish (1kg) and a few dentex but they were at about 35m depth and I was afraid to reach it as visibility is not stellar.

Going to try other places except of Rhodos city tomorrow.

This all sounds good. I am flying to Rhodes in May with two freedivers, our plan was to get to Kalymnos as it's had lots of mentions, but I've not been able to find out any specifics yet. So we might start by heading to Lindos and seeing how we get on there. grass, I am assuming that you mean you are in Lindos?

Thanks

I was in Rhodes but visited lindos as well. Please note that the hunting is forbidden in may.

grass, do you know if there is an information/coastguard office that tells you where it is forbidden to fish? Or are you allowed to fish anywhere (except ports of course) ?

here in cyprus now they started protecting a lot of places :rcard as if it is the spearo who does the real damage to the envronment :vangry

Grass - 25 m depth just 30 from the shore! Please tell me where is this place. Which hotel, which beach etc. Maybe add some photos...
thnx

I'm not sure, AFAIK there was only one casino. I came there in the May so there were no traffic at all.
The vis was acceptable, probably 8m on the surface 10m at the bottom. I made a few shallow dives to 12-15m but there were no fish, so I went deeper. I saw a couple of good dentexes but they were too deep for me (probably below 35).
