Rockpooling for Lobster, Crab & Prawns. Fishing for Conger eels. (Field magazine)

I was given a copy of the August 2006 edition of Field magazine yesterday. The cover shot is of a couple on a beach holding up edible crabs they have caught.

Several articles will be of interest to some spearos (& beach combers):

• Gather prawns from rock pools.
  
• Crabbing & catching lobster from rocks pools (on a v. low tide). The technique suggested uses a home made crab hook & net, with photo & simple description of how to make them --- they are rather posh, and something simpler would probably work as well.
  
• Conger eel fishing.

There are also fashion articles (wellies!) & a natty BBQ bucket for the beach.

Not sure if this is the current issue or previous issue.

[Re. old magazines, if the stores & publisher can't help, check Google to see if the articles have been published on the web. Failing that, talk to friends who hunt or... try doctors' & dentists' surgeries! (Although some prefer Country Life, Horse & Hounds...Field magazine is often to be found next to Punch & Private Eye).]

its a copy from a couple of months back. It does make it sound very easy and everything that i have found so far is that rooting crabs/losters out of holes is not easy!

Plenty of people scouring the rockpools with nets and long handled hooks at croyde whilst i was there the other weekend - huge tides probably helped. Some chaps where hunting crabs for bait apparently

Prawns are alright but I hate it when I catch crabs! I think it must be a northen thing but seeing folks gathering at low tide. The old bloke across the road catches a couple of decent lobsters every time he goes out, mide this is an old fishing village so I think this is knowledge that has been handed down from days of old when this was also a major wrecking venue

BTW A colleague mentioned today that there will be a record high tide on the Thames this year (highest for 20 years) this October. He also said they will leave the Thames barrier open.

I've seen people catch small bait crabs in rock pools, decent size mussels & even small prawns -- but never a decent size crab or lobster.

Nice lobster. Looks like you were diving rather than rockpooling though(?)-- nothing wrong with that of course.

Yup ...was diving but couldn`t resist showing off that beauty!!(aye first pic.)

One of the local lads who does a bit of lobster fishing and whose brother is a lobster fisherman(is that what they are called?) used to tell me about the older fellas that used to go out at low tide and use a "click"(stick/tickler) and poke around the holes up here to get lobbies but it seems largely to have died out around here, well I havn`t seen it anyway. Another method that folk use to get lobbies out their holes when is to have a ball of fishing twine on the end of a stick which the lobster gets totally caught up in and can be dragged out its hole. This is considered extremely unsporting in these parts and I would have nothing to do with this method of catching lobster. My beauty(lobster) was in the wrong place at the wrong time and tasted mighty fine!

How are you getting on with the Diveyak, btw?
I purchased one this summer and its been great fun - making some really good spots accessible for me to dive. Its absolutely hilarious with 3 people on board!

I had myself + 3 kids on board the Malibu2 on holidays (minor rescue of some local kids). Tried to get a fourth kid on board but it was too much - so left him for the sharks. (Just kidding, he swam back unaided).
