Dear fellow divers,

I will be cruising with a bunch of friends in a sailing boat in Portugal, Spain and Italy this summer. Do anyone know the latest rules and regulations we have to adhere to when diving and spearfishing from our boat. We will carry our own equipment and be independent of dive centres (unless for refilling if we don't get a compressor by then ;-)

Our route will be something like: Portimao on the South coast of Portugal through Gibraltar and through to the Balearic Islands and on to Corsica and Sardinia - any specific diving spots, anchrages and other advice are also very appreciated.

Thanking beforehand for all the help that this forum is well known for!

Hi,
In Spain it's illegal to spearfish on scuba, sometimes if the police find the combination of scuba tanks and spearguns on board they may confiscate your equipment and fine you. For spearfishing one needs a spearfishing licence which involves a medical certificate and insurance, if you are federated with a CMAS affiliated national federation the insurance is usually taken care of. I know that my Spanish spearing lcence is valid in other EU countries but you'll have to check with whom you get your spearfishing licence from to see if it's also valid in other countries.

Good luck and have a great trip!
