After floating about here for a little while I'm struck at the attitude; it seems relatively familiar to me. I'm a sailor first, a diver second(so far) and as sailors go a peculiar one--one of those rare few that appreciate the inheirent value of non-engine assisted sailboats. That's uncommon anymore, almost to the point where the majority of the people who "sail" don't even know the basic issues involved in the wonderful process of getting a boat from place to place under sail. Sailing is sailing. Motorsailing ain't sailing. Not to say there's anything wrong with that--but it is tasteless to pretend you're doing something you aren't. Take a look at the Cruising World Magazine webpage sometime for a ample taste of posture and pretense.

Now my interest in free diving is much the same thing. Scuba is cool, kinda, for what it is, but there's hardly a question that free diving is a more interesting, intimate, and rewarding experience. There aren't too many sports like that anymore where lack of gear is a virtue. It's great to see such an active forum, and this illustrates to me a good value.

By the way, for an open invitiation, we at OarClub International--our non-auxillary sailtraining organization--have three boats leaving for the Sea of Cortez this July, then to the Marquesas, then to Tahiti, perhaps the Line Islands or others, Hawaii, and likely back to California. This is a 22 month cruise, and there will be crew positions availible for many of the passages. Who wouldn't want to dive that! Anyhow, I throw this out because I find it much more likely to find kindred spirits among you folks than many of the others that call themselves "sailors."
