Hey guys... I think I am finally on the right thread here. I am a spearo and moved up from Bournemouth in the winter. I am looking to meet with keen spearo's in the area. I live near Glasgow airport and have only been for one session so far and saw NIL!
I am seriously keen to get some decent fish and would gladly be someone's dive buddy.... cheers Grant

Hey there,

I live on the Black Isle, Culbokie. recently moved to Scotland as i was working in Dubai. Looking for spearos in the Highlands.

< ') ) )><

im a novice, never been spear fishing before but would like to tag along some day with my snorkel and see if its my thing, However I am a keen fisherman and know the coastline off whitehills very well, and know some very good marks to get cod lobster, dogfish, eel and some big flatfish,if anybody would be like a partner to keep them company i am up for it

Hi pals,
i'm Andrea from Italy , exactly from Elba island the third island in Italy. I'm 25 years old and decided to move to Edinburgh to learn english and looking for a job.
but i love spearfisching in Italy i usually went four times a week and here it miss so much.
i love fisching in 3-4 meters ambushing looking for sea basses sea breams and gilt head, because i believe that you can caught good fishes without go down many meters. Spearfishing it's quite dangerous sport, in Italy every years died lots of divers so do spearfishing but with careful. Anyway sometimes when i m fit i try to caught grouper and red snapper in 15, 20 metres.
So i arrived last month and i would like to go fisching near edinburgh, but i haven't idea about the fishes here, spots, about the water's degrees..etc i heard that i can do it only in the summer so now the water it's too cold and that near edinburgh there are a lot of lobsters..
so can anyone give this notices and maybe we can meet up for a pint

Best regards

Andrea

Hi everyone. Just moved back to Aberdeen and I'm about to buy wetsuit for freediving/spearfishing. Any recommendations regarding thickness, brand or stockists? I've read reviews of folk diving UK winter water in 5mm Cressi suits. Is 7mm too buoyant or something?

Thanks for your help!

Likewise - 5 for me. A 2mm gilet underneath can give a bit more warmth of needed.
I had a 7 mm jacket long ago but as Pete says it took a lot more weight to use it for diving.
A good 5mm is surprisingly warm if it fits well.

I think we need to get a 2012 thread up there now!

Hey Manicmunday,
i don't really know the water's degrees here in scotland but in italy during the winter the water is about 14 degrees so i used a wetsuit tailor made 7mm.
it's very important with the 7mm websuits to have a tailor made, because is very thick so if is too big you can't move very well.
so i use jaket 7mm and pants 5 Polosub made with yamamoto neoprene because during the winter i use to dive in 0-4 m searching sea bass. Yamamoto neoprene is the best kind of neoprene ( it's the most expensive one ) cos it's very soft elastic and very warm.it's the warmest neoprene but is good if u dive between 0-10m if u want dive deper is a good chose the neoprenes like Heiwa sheico and niam long these neoprenes are cheaper than yamamoto ( i use the Heiwa during the summer fisching near 20m ).
i'll attached some website where you can buy a tailor made wetsuit there is the english version as well
actually i use polosub, i think is the best websuit meaker in the world, but is a bit expensive , topsub as well is very good and it has good products very cheap.

POLOSUB - Mute su misura - Accessori per l'apnea e la pesca subacquea

TOPSUB mute su misura e accessori per la subacquea

btw can t wait to go to fisching here in scotland

cheers Andrea

Hey, thanks everyone for the helpful info and advice. I don't know how many hours I've spent trawling through different websites, reading reviews and comparing prices. Just when I think I've made a decision I looked at those from you Andrea, and now I'm not sure again... Too many choices!

I was going to buy a 7mm, but I'll want to use it for training sessions (hopefully in a pool), and for summer diving, so buoyancy might be a bit annoying. I'm Scottish, so maybe I should just man up and get a 5mm! I could always use a gilet like you mentioned grantl, but I'll have to test it out first. Diving in February, awesome!

I read on one of the other forums that this guy has ice baths 2-3 times a week to try and condition his body to the cold. That sounds like he's very committed. I'll have to consider it...

It seems like there's a few spearo's and divers in Edinburgh. I've got friends and family there, so I'll let you all know when I'm coming down. It sounds like there's a few good sites. Get in the water Andrea! No excuses! :D

Anyway, I'll keep you all posted and review my kit when I get it. Thanks again.

hey man , i suggest to buy just only the jacket 7mm ,with a completly 7mm wetsuit you cant move very well.

so those guys are artisan they are tailors and u have just to measure yourself and send them your measure, if u want to camouflage it ,whic neoprene u prefer, reinforcements on elbows and knees ...etc than they make a wetsuit like a tailored attire.
In Italy there are a lot of artisan like polosub - topsub - Marea - Biavati- Leroi design-elios ...
however as well is enought warm a jacket 5mm plus a gilet 1.5mm and bermuda as well.

however i have all of my stuff in Italy but when the spring ll come i ll bring everything here and can't wait, my friends in Italy are fisching everyday very big sea bases and sea brems and myself here just making coffee at costa cafe and learning english :head:head:head i'm gonna crazy:duh:duh
Yes Manic we definitively get in touch..let me know when you ll come down here. as well i can take the train to the north i would like to dive somewhere up to the north. never been there and it's a big opportunity to try an other sea very different from mediterranean

cheers Andrea
