Sea Angling for Spearos

Guernsey Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society
and
Bailiwick Bass Club

2 separate clubs who fish comps, sometimes against each other.

Yep, there were kayak/dinghy prizes, top 3, which counted in addition to the normal boat prizes (ie big fish off kayak could win kayak and boat prizes). Its in the results under Dinghy, not sure where they draw the line between dinghy and boat though.

You could enter any boat comps in the kayak, to do a lot you'd need to be in one of the clubs as they run their own comps. GBASS or BBC, the choice is yours...

Yeah, it was dinghy/kayak. Dinghy having to be less than 15ft and less than 10hp if I remember right. Just to add a dimension for those who don't motor out miles and of course for the ever increasing interest in kayak angling.

The boat section of the main GBASS club comp is now getting more interest, due to kayaks coming into it. Clarky had all the fish in his boat catches off the kayak so it's a very good way to get amongst the prizes in the boat section, especially when the weather has been as it has this year and those with proper boats haven't been able to get out into sheltered bays without going through a massive swell from the harbour etc

That is one hell of a dinghy, there are semi professional fishermen with smaller boats than 15'! I would of thought 10' & 5hp would be more compatible to share the same class as a yak?

I think I'd agree Mart but I'm not on the committee, more of an advisor at times... Might suggest something for next year though I don't know how many entries there were in that section. Things have been rather consumed with other issues.

Thanks for the info guys. might be something for the future if more kayaks get involved, sound like it's kind of chicken and egg... need the category, need the participants...

I'll ask today Jonny and get an idea of numbers who entered in Kayaks and also how many in the club fish from the yak now. I know of at least 3 so not just one on his own.

Decided that since I now have a proper bass, I need to find me a proper mullet seeing as thats pretty much all i've fished for this year so far. I have probably spent 95% of my fishing time after those two species this year with mixed results.

Anyway, headed east to a top secret mullet mark
and got shirvying. not much action then it started to rain which seemed to bring on the bites, kept gettign these bites but couldn't hook then, then I had a proper bite, I had the rod across my lap as I was chucking some more shirvy in and the float went, followed by the rod arching over and me trying to grab it while putting the spoon back in the bucket. My complete hash of this meant I never connected to whatever it was. Money on a bream though.

Few casts later and I had another god bite, float went, I struck and fish on!! Felt heavy but not powerful so thought I had a bream, but then it took off for th ehorizon and I knew it was a mullet. He went straight out, then hard right, had to hold the rod out as far as I could to stop him getting the line on the rocks, finally turned him and he went left instead, same again, full pressure on trying to get him away from the rocks and he did, he went deep and long against a tight drag but it wasn't to last much longer, he finally started to do as I wanted and started to come in closer so I got down the rocks with the net and tried for him, missed him and he went again but not far, pulled him back roud, couple of turns of the reel and into the net. Nice one.

He felt much bigger but only went 2-11 on the digi's. Fought like a demon, as they always seem to do. You just need to look at the size of that paddle on the back to see they will fight like stink.

Got him back in the water and started again, had a bite straight away, missed it, and another and hooked it this time, there's a weight there but not taking drag since I tightened up. Surfaces away form me and it's a big beak. Swung it up and wished i'd have used the net!! He managed to wriggle off and down between the rocks, well out of reach. Poo.

He seemed to be close to the water and was flapping about, next time I looked I couldn't see so he might have got back in.

Shame, as he looked like he might have gone the lb.

Signing off...

Andy

Don't curse me too soon Mart... Spec hunt next weekend!! :martial

Ate a whole fillet of the bass last night. The outlaw made a Norwegian fish pie thing which retained a lot of the flavour of the bass without masking it much. Will have to find the recipe for you as it was really yummy and the whole fillet was gone between 3 adults and one child as well as the prawns and other bits of course!!

I could do with some new bass & mullet recipes (post new threads in the recipe section?).

I have been eating fried bass for 40 years - pretty much the same recipe - fillet a fresh bass & fry it, works every time for me!

OK folks, quickie report so far on my efforts in the Guernsey Specimen Hunt competition (most fish over set weights)...

Last night, long walk over rocks to meet Guern (team FG) and Magpie (who isn't fishing the comp). Trying for a pout. Caught a few pout, best about 10oz I guess. Went quiet, maggers left, Guern moved along a bit, I moved and had a bream of 1-8, no more bites went home about 1am.

Today, did shopping to co-op, left home about 9.30 to chosen mark, went back home, got bag, went back to mark
.

Started to shirvy and got fishing... Saw a biggie in the shirvy straight away and eventually hooked into one. This is where report gets blurred as i'm short on time... In the order I caught them...

1-10

2-5

3-12 (gutted!!
Min weight is 4lb)

2-11 (this one went like a train!!!!!)

Put them all in this pool to wait for the tide to come up. Gives the mark away somewhat...

It was getting a bit rough by now, the swell came up big time with the tide coming in.

Cracking session, 4 mullet in one trip (about 3 hours) and lost another one which screamed line off them went head shaking on the surface, throwing the hook.

Right. Where to tonight then???????

To cut a long story short... I didn't get anything big enough to weigh in. Closest I came was sunday mornign when after a mullet and soemthing took off big style... Turned out to be a bream of 1-15-0, an ounce short of qualifying.

Sorry about the dodgy pic!!:yack

Not much else to report but I have plans for the cliffs in the not too distant future...

Nice fish ADM, shame it wasnt quite a weigher, but tasty anyway? were can i see the results so far? is there a table - didnt see it on your site?

No idea what the results are. I didn't go to the final weigh in and i'm not part of that club. The main lads and organisers apprear to still be sleeping their 60 hour fishing marathon off. I only did 22 hours of fishing so fresh as a daisy!! Hopefully Sam and co will post the full results of round 1 soon...

That's pretty incredible if someone has managed that. I know Dave S had at least 2 but not sure if he had anything else. He's been quiet... It's been won with 8 species before but the last few years have needed 12 or 13 species to win it. I have a lot to do.....

First decent set of results is likely to be in the press Thursday. Len usually goes to every weigh in and writes it all down in addition to the official clubs recording.
