Sea Angling for Spearos

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
The next species is a little more unusual and I have to say I am chuffed!

Took halfway up the seawall on a little bit of Gulp! Sandworm on the dropshot gear. Went quite well actually. Weighed in at 282g and 22cm long.

Yes topknot, there live mainly attached under stones during the daylight, we find then while looking for ormers in the winter by turning stones at low tide, some folk eat them.

Yes, it's a topknot as said. Nice one to add to my lure caught species tally which is currently on 15 species, need to get out after some others but the weather is killing it.

Yes i'm still alive Mart, nothing exciting to report, a few bass, some rockies, 47cm bass today on a big paddle tail lure, gobies, blennies, mackerel etc etc.

Been mostly after bass and finding it hard going for some reason.

Sea doesn't look too friendly today!! Vazon is brown, very strange to see the water that colour down there.

Went out last Wednesday with buddy--retired USAF Col. & his 10 year old daughter, to Calaveras Lake. She'd never driven a boat before--real thrill for her. She had never pulled in a big fish--thrill for all. Caught 4 nice cats and then the Redfish came in schooling. Fast & furious they would hit just about anything, spoons, top waters, soft plastics, silver hooks, you name it--if it swam or glittered they would bite. Lasted an hour. We brought home 8 X 20-24 inch reds. Now we have to have a fish fry. :thankyou

There cant be many things more frustrating than losing a fish like that Jonny, bad luck!
What do you think it was, what happened, did the hook come free or line snap?

I think it was either a large pollack or a wrasse - it dived down, so probably wrasse? there was a knot of tide in just 12m water so i was fighting the tide pulling me as well as the fish in the weed. I think the line snapped or teeth cut it [very thin braid].
Still, there's plenty more fish in the sea [apparently] :)

I never bother with rod leash. Can not see how you could lose a rod...

Yup! .. Finally I lost rod, reel and lure! It was parked in my rod holder behind me. :head .. At least I know it wasn,t a fish, as the lure was clipped on the rod.

Live and learn.

Sorry to hear that Pav - lost from your SOT kayak? Rather than a leash, I wonder if it would be practical/effective to rig some kind of marker float?

My brother lost his prized Abu 503 coarse fishing reel when he first bought a rod back. He tipped the bag up on the canal bank and out dropped the reel, which bounced into the canal :(. That was 40 years ago and I know it still bothers him. He recently bought a vintage Abu 501 or 506 (the match fishing reel siblings of the 503) on ebay, even though he rarely if ever goes fishing these days.
