Sea bass hunting : advice (UK)

Aspetto for Bass..

Last saturday I went hunting here in Devon, got my biggest ever bass in about 6m of water, after about 30sec aspetto.
I find that bigger bass stay at a distance (hence I am using 110cm gun) and smaller bass come closer to take a look. If you are lucky enough to see shoal of bass they will circle you slowly and present very easy target.. and they dont mind you moving.. but if you are hunting the lonely big one.. you need to stay completely still

Dived yesterday no Bass but plenty of Golden grey mullet about, and more interestingly quite a few Red mullet too.
Unfortunately I have all the fish from yesterday to smoke so, no diving tonight

What I do is find the sand/weed edge and follow it out. I dive down to about 3m and hold on to the rocks and wait for about 30 secs. Normally I see mullet in this shallow water.
Sort of like a warm up for me.

Then as the water hits 5m I am warmed up and relaxed and have had a bit of a swim. When I get to this sort of depth I have a breathe up on the surface holding on to my float, nice slow breathes for about 2 mins (more than 1:30, but I find I can dive for longer with 2:15 to 2:30 breathe ups, and after 1:30 it starts to feel right etc)

I have a window sash weight on the end of my 10m float line, I hold onto this and slip down slowly to the bottom. At 5m it is about enough with x3 4lb blocks of lead to keep me on the bottom. Below 6m I dont need to hold the float weight.

I find that I can slip down slowly with the extra weight and I dont need to fin - this saves air and meand that I am quieter. Also I dont have to haul it back up after 1:30 secs or 2:00 on the bottom. This is an additional safety thing for me as I know that above 5m I will float back up slowly. Normally only need one kick or two to get back to the surface (5m isnt too deep). But around 7m or 8m this is better for me to ditch the extra weight. I haul it back up as I do the breathe up and swim along another 30 secs or minute or so, following the line of the weed.

I have found this to work for me. The float lets boats know where I am and provides a useful buoy for windsurfers to race around !

I can attach a bag to the float too, and hang onto it for resting or attach the gun to it etc. Floats are gooood !

Anyway, everyine has different buyancy etc. My suit is old and thick, I'm 6'2" etc - hence the weight. Work out what depth you are neutrally buoyant, I like being neut at about 5m as I hunt between 4m and 8m generally.

Hope this is helpful.

Oh, I dont see fish then dive. I just dive and wait. I try not to waste air on the way down so that I can wait down longer and have a greater safety margin. If bass are around they will come to investigate.

Normally sink down with minimum of movement, lie on the bottom, tap the rocks, or strum the gun bands once or twice. Wait, chill and relax, check the time on the watch at about what feels like one minute, gauge how I am feeling at this point, listen to the body, if anything feels wrong head for the surface. If not then I look to see if any fish are around, shoot them if they are close enough, wait still if they are not, carefully check the watch as it approaches 2mins if I am still down. Head up at 2 mins regardless. Hope thats useful. Ed

Went out on Saturday and missed two lovely bass - must have been my reading glasses.... Still some nice bass around - anyone know when they start to head to deeper parts ?

What sort of fish come inshore in September ?

Had a case of mistaken identity the other day with a bass/mullet that turned out to be a mullet - went on the table for a friend nonetheless.

Friday after work had 5 mullet to 6 lbs most around 1-2lbs 1 bass 3 1/2 lbs 1 pollock and 2 triggers.
You can find all kinds of fish around in September , the water is warmest from now until November (weather permitting)
Triggers ,Red mullet, Bass , in fact lots of weird and wonderful fish make an appearance about now, If I could get 60 miles west there would be a chance of albacore tuna, but the weather has put paid to that idea.

Wow Huan - hope you are eating all those Seen some triggers but heard that they are a bit tasteless ? Got any recipes ?

Looking for turbot or brill or bream - anyone catch these ?

Cheers for any info - Ed

Whilst not exactly a sporting fish, atlantic grey triggerfish are one of the best tasting fish found in the UK
Skin, fillet, dip in egg and breadcrumbs and fry

Ooops that's me set straight ! Cheers Dave - not sporting due to their seemingly stoned behaviour ?

Low Viz=better fishing??

I just have been fishing for bass for two days, both days viz was about max 9feet, I got my biggest ever bass and bunch of smaller ones.. (I dont have a job so I fish for money at the moment) I thought that perhaps bad visibility makes hunting easier here in UK?
I have been out in the same place with "perfect" conditions, but have not seen a single fish.. Oh by the way the record bass was about 9kg I do have picture, but cant get it on this site as I dont have computer of my own..

Good luck to all UK spearos, oh and by the way if any one is interested in joining me for some fishing here in Exeter area I am more than happy to show where to go for some serious bass hunting..

Pekka

Nice one Pekka - looking forward to seeing the picture - 9kg is pretty large !

I think you may be right - just been out for 2 hours at a place which normally produces bass but it was clearer than usual - I only saw 3 mullet and a few pollack.

Ive been trying a new spot recently and it is more cloudy / less viz and the bass come closer. So maybe you have a thing there.

Spearfishing in Exeter

Hi Pekka,

Me and a mate are planning to try some spearfishing round Weymouth area... he lives in Exeter so we'll be staying there over the weekend. We've never been before (I have to get a speargun first!) so would be grateful for any advice you're prepared to give to us.

Cheers,
Alex

Hi Alex,

I live in Exeter, and have been hunting around this area for some time and I have to say you should go to Budleigh for fish.. I have not been anywhere else where I have managed to nail as many fish as there.. There is a trick to it though, you have to swim constantly agains a heavy current..

Give me a call and I can perhaps meet you guys here in Exeter and see if I can be of help.. my number is 07916279721.

I am trying my best to figure out how to get the picture on the net...it was taken with my phone so the quality is not the best.. but it is still quite good photo.

Ed,
I rememer hunting in absolutely clear water in Cornwall and I saw few bass, but most of the time too far and very easily spooked away.. here in Devon where viz is less the fish dont seem to mind if you move slightly when adjusting your gun for a good shot..

Safe diving,

Pekka

Alright Pekka - got some lovely bass yesterday in very clear water (visiblity down to 7m and sunny too so everything on the outcrops about 5m was crystal clear).

Could see the bass really well, and they were chking me out in a very unhurried manner - but I wasnt moving on the surface - the current is evil here - you simply cannot swim against it (long fin Sporasubs) so we drift down in it then across to the slack water and back up for another pass.

At least it seems to work in this location.

Aspetto in the current is pretty much impossible but by being static on the surface you get a good chance for some shots - saw some nice garfish but my aim was waaaay off - damn they are narrow - guess you need a fine prong thing.

Oh well - off shallow water fish watching with a few relatives then maybe some more bassing.

Saw a nice red mullet but it looked too small and cool to shoot - just flipping it's little barbels around on the bottom.

Cheers
Ed

my tips for bass:

Try shallow water hunting them first and observe their behaviour! It will help a lot when you go after them in the 5-10M depths using many a short/long aspetto to get their attention
No finning allowed here, use the rocks/seaweed to advance using your left/right hand extremely slowly so as not to even create vibrations in the water.
You'll find bass up to 4+Kg in size if you manage to be discreet enough in the water and eventually, you'll stumble on one resting/eating/wandering, or preparing for a pounce themselves

Don't react to their presence by pointing your speargun towards them as they will instantly distance themselves, do it very, very slowly and you might not scare them off. Movement is your enemy when hunting bass. My favourite way to hunt them is in very shallow water at sunrise/sunset. Pretend you're an indian underwater and don't make a sound/vibration in the water, the element of surprise will have the fish on the end of your spear alongside playing on it's curious nature and the intrusion you have made into it's territory.

Find spots to hide and try waiting while looking dead centre with fixed eyes at the tip of your spear -- they'll come right onto the end of it and look you right in the eyes before you kebab em.

If you look at them they distance themselves -- no movement! You need to be v. patient for this to work but the reward is there if you are completely silent and motionless but most of all - well hidden -- especially the tip of your spear. This works as well in the seaweed looking out onto the sand, in water as shallow as 50cm depth.

My preferred method is the first -- advancing using my free left hand very, very delicately and slowly -- hoping to surprise them while they're eating, wandering, resting or waiting to pounce on unsuspecting prey themselves.

I've found them concentrated in the kelp/laminaria/angel hair/green spaghetti variety of seaweeds including whatever you call that slippery green one that covers some rocks. They love the sand and rocks too. I tend to do my aspetto at the limits of some rocks or seaweed, beside the sand or completely hidden under the laminaria using it to hide the threatening gun. I either check the holes in the rocks/seaweed or hide myself looking out onto the sand or back upwards from the sand. Or altogether on the sand/seaweed in open water.

Find spots where mullet seem to be concentrated, often bass will be in the same area, I've found they seem to use them for cover and often when looking into a school of mullet you might just spot a bass in there -- at the back of the pack more often than not.

If you see mullet when doing your aspetto, wait - don't take notice of them and if you remain motionless then you might just get some bass afterwards.

I prefer going after them with a 90cm tube -- 120mm spear - 6.5/7mm thick in diamater. Two guns I have at present are the Beuchat mundial and Sporasub's Viper 30.

Happy Hunting

edit -- try fishing at slackwater on the high or low tide or 1hr before either but there's no real golden rules here.

you might find a picture of a 2.5Kg one I took a few weeks back here http://hoedic2004.lenivet.com -- Francois/CNIP

I have gotten about the biggest bass in uk... how cool although now it is sold in the fish market.. but how do you contact the spearing people about your record fish? do you just phone them up and tell them to come and see your fish or what?

Next time I'll ring them up.. I guess.. hope some more big bass is swimming my way..
