Sea bass hunting : advice (UK)

Adrian - didn't read this in time - hope you had a good session - I did, landed a nice 4.5 pound bass - give me a shout on Wednesday maybe if the weather is good - felt a bit sea sick today ! (May have been lingering beer-related...)

Ed

Nice one, never went in in the end - first spots were a bit lumpy then short of time when we made it to the East coast.

Wednesday sounds good, tides will be better by then too - let'c home the wind dies off. I'll give you a shout later in the week

AUTUMN/WINTER BASS
----------------------------------

Right - been out quite alot over the course of the summer and continuing to do so - as a beginner (first season really) I was wondering what happened with bass over Oct / Nov / Dec / Jan ...

Recently the water temp has dropped from about 18C down to the current temp of about 14C.

The visibility has gone up though - this depends on the weather (storms etc) but generally I think it is better than in the summer.

Anyway, seeing less bass. (I think Dave-spearo mentioned this too).

Does anyone have any info on bass behaviour over the winter ?

Do they dissapear naturally - in a sort of migration pattern.

Or are they looking for warmer water?
(sort of related but possibly driven by different forces).

I've only seen a couple rather than the loads I was seeing for each session over the summer.

If you are a resident bass-behaviorologist let me know !
Cheers
Ed

Why we don't have any bass here????

I am yet to see underwater:waterwork

The Bass have left your country and come to Gibraltar for the winter. Starting to see the first few biggies over here ;)

Hope to confirm this with a nice picture soon.

OI!!!! :naughty Leave our fish alone!

In the English channel, bass head offshore into deeper water in the winter, where they form huge pre spawning shoals. This is what winter pair trawling targets, and why it is so damaging to bass stocks (targeting spawning fish, great conservation measure!). The UK pair trawling ban will have very little effect, as most of the fishing is well over 12 miles out

Ntrik, You studying in Exeter.. I am in Queens Building writing this mail... so we could meet somewhere and I can fill you in on anything you want to know about fishing here in Exeter.. I have three year experience... I'll PM you my mobile number...
Shane, I was into smoking this summer as I got smoker bags from Finland.. so I smoked my fish. i also made some..hmm.. i dont know how to spell the name of the dish.. when you soak your bass in lime and lemon juice with some onions..
I did barbacue bass couple of times and grilled one with some greens..
One of the best recepies was bass with mango salad.. grilled bass on bed of greens and mango.. hmm... I cant wait to get some more bass next summer...... .. I am not that keen on winter waters here in UK..

So that's it then ? No more bass this winter ?

Darn ! I was just getting a taset for them :)

Well - guess I'll buy a torch and practice a few night dives - apparently plenty of flat fish and skate around ....

What do you target in winter ? (I am not prepared to hibernate - and besides the Elios 5mm is still keeping me very warm)

Cheers
Ed

No more Bass..

Well ED,

I just met Nnikos here in Exeter, DB member, NTrick, and he wants to go diving during winter months, so I guess I am off diving some time soon ish.... if I manage to find a job here and stay for some time.

My main target when the water is cold is Plaice... very easy to get but not much challenge.. Nikos told me that some of the creatures that I just watch during winter are etable so I might get some new culinary experiences this winter..

I have not been diving much at Winter time as I have been busy studying, perhaps this winter though... I need new suit.. my 5,5mm Ezclapes is not warm enough.. way too cold for that.. perhaps Elios 7mm or something.. I can believe you guys dive with 5mm suits year round here... I get cold in no time... as I did in Norway this summer... water temp. +8C.. I believe it might not get quite that cold here but cold enough to keep me on the beach with my current gear selection..

Oh and Bass... well I'll be sure to post pictures if I catch any..:)

Hey Pekka
As for the suit thing... I got an Elios 5mm (open inner / Kanoko outer about £120 I think) - anyway, it is sooooo warm.

I used to go in a surfing 7mm or something like that and froze after 45mins at 17C.

Now that the water here is about 14C and the air temp is 10C on a good day (and then there is wind chill taking that down to about 5C I reckon) - well the Elios is my prefered method of dress for the weekends !

Sad but true - I jump into it while waiting for a mate to come round and go spearing. Warms up in the house and then you really dont feel the cold - I'll try it again this weekend and let you know how it goes. I think the water will be about 12C this weekend.

So far can easily manage hour and a half sessions. (Been trying to get my mate to buy an Elios so we can go in for longer :) ).

Anyway - the best decision I made - now cold water and feeling cold is not even a consideration. You can concentrate on bass finding and so on and not have the chatter of teeth put your aim off.

It is so warm that I am planning on getting a 3mm.

Also it is warm enough for drift spearing - ie when the water is shallow and the weed beds are 6 foot below and you just want to drift over them for a few hours - ie warm enough for little or no motion.

Lovely suit - I wish I got comission !

Well - take it easy - and let us know if you find any winter bass.
Ed

Oh - Shane - hands off the bass - I really think that if you see any you should consider the implications on Guernsey stocks.... Let them grow nice and big for us for next year :)

If you avoid bass I PROMISE that I wont shoot any of your Dentex if I see them....

Fair deal ?!

Ed

Guys and Girls

If you really want to be warm get a biothermic lined suit , any make Picasso. Spetton, etc .They are much warmer than an open cell suit .
They probably need a little more care (lube) donning, but the extra warmth makes a big difference.

Hey Ed,

I think that is a fair Deal.

Although my totem wont be too happy when the 10kilo bass swims past and i dont put it into action.

But anyway, bass for Dentex is a fair swap.

I have a Dr Jeckle and Mr Hide thing going. I think most of us spearos do. When i get my ears wet, i become more like a savage hunter from the jungle. I dont think that part of me will comply to the deal we have just struck though ;)

I will try my best to persuade him.

Shane
