Sea lion or seal? how to identify them...

Very informative. We have both sea lions and harbor seals in Southern California and it's so easy to tell the difference that I don't give much thought to why I know one from the other. I'll add the the behavior is very different too. Sea lions and be very aggressive about taking speared fish and forcing your to fight for them and the males can be very large- over 1000 pounds. It can be dangerous to have a fish on a stringer attached to your weight belt. I friend had a sea lion grab his fish and take him down to 70 feet before he dropped his weight belt. But I have never seen a seal try to take my fish. Just the way they generally move is different. Sea lions are generally moving much faster and can startle you with a high speed pass. Seals can seem affectionate. I've had them clasp my fins to their chests. That can be a little startling when you are swimming along at depth and something stops your kick, but they are just trying to get to know you. And many times on the surface they try to touch their noses to your mask.
