Sealing inside mech pocket.

Hey guys,
I managed to score some American white oak and some Australian Rose Gum today. Thinking of trying to make a gun.

Is sealing inside the mech pocket needed? If my mech is half inch, would cutting a slightly larger pocket and then filling with epoxy then re cutting to half inch be the easiest / best way? And when it's pinned to I need to find a way to seal the inside of the hole where the pins are to hold in the mech ?

In a word, yes, if you use epoxy. When a laminated handle of mine failed (after many years of use) the best glue expert that I could find at the time looked at it. He told me that water will not affect the epoxy but it will migrate around the glue, in the wood, and the joint will eventually fail unless the glue edges are sealed. Since I used two of my guns over a thirty year period, it was probably worth the little extra effort.

So for example, cut about 2mm deeper and wider, fill with epoxy, then cut again to exact size?

You build guns a lot more precisely than I ever did. My mechanisms can probably move 1.5 mm sideways after they are pinned. I had enough room to rough up the inside and paint it with very thin epoxy.
