Rules


To have your catch entered in the UK Fish of the Month (FOM) competition you must satisfy the following rules.

Membership.
1. You must have been a current active member of the DeeperBlue.com Forums, when you made the catch.
2. You must have been a member of said forums for a minimum of one calendar month prior to making the catch.
3. You must have previously posted at least 10 times on said forums under your user name as described in 1. above, when you made the catch.

Catch

1. Your catch must not break any laws currently enacted in the country where it was taken.
2. Your catch must be within any size limits as laid down in the country where it was taken.
3. Your catch may be of any fish species and including cuttlefish, squid, crab and lobster but excluding scallops.

Method

1. You must have been fully immersed in water when you made the catch.
2. If beneath the water surface you may only have been using the practice of breath hold freediving to make your catch.
3. You must have made the catch by hand, using a hand spear, a polespear, a Hawaiian sling, or a speargun powered solely by your own manual loading effort.
4. No method of capture must break any laws currently enacted in the country where it was made.

Entry

1. You must have posted a report of your catch including details of its weight and with a clear photograph, on the DeeperBlue forums.
2. A picture, with a daily newspaper in the background, must accompany the entry to prove date of capture.
3 Accurate scales must have been used to weigh your entered catch and DB staff may request proof of this.
4. All entries must be in by 23:59hrs GMT on 2nd of following month. (e.g. April entries to be in by 2nd May)
5. You may post your own entry on the appropriate FOM monthly thread.
6. Staff reserve the right to modify or even reject and delete entries that do not comply with the rules.
7. All weights must be entered in Pounds and Ounces
Result

1. All winners will be chosen by popular vote on a DB on-line poll.
2. A draw will result in the first posted entry winning.
3. Voting will last for 5 days once poll has been set up.
4. You can enter as many times as you like every month but you will be asked to nominate only one entry to forward to the poll.
5. In the event of there being 20 or more individuals entering the competition a short list of 20 will be chosen by DB staff.

Staff decisions on all matters relating to the FOM are absolute and final.

I have managed to get in twice in the last month with some success as I managed a couple of "1sts".

On the first trip, I was out on my kayak on a glass like sea but with a northerly wind blowing, it made the conditions really chilly on the surface. After speaking to a few people, I have changed my technque from aspetto to agguato for bass hunting to be more pro-active for searching for larger bass hidden in the kelp. Needless to say my bottom times were considerably reduced but it is all a learning curve. I only sighted a few bass in the gloom and did not spot any in the kelp. After this, I paddled to a new spot and fished the deeper water hoping for a pollock. Instead I picked up my first trigger from 18 metres after watching it teasingly ghost in with its shoal. It was a hard days fishing but happy with the trigger.

Having returned home for a week I ventured out to north Wales to a spot that Broseidon and myself fished last year that was completely littered with bass. Needless to say, there were very few about this year.

The spot has a really easy entry point but during mid tide, the current can rip you right off your feet when you enter. The viz looked great at first but dropped down to 3 metres further out on the reef. The way we fished it was to fin out in the current, drift down and then swim towards shore and return to the entry point in the eddy that forms. It works a treat as you fish a large area with very little energy expenditure. It is a fairly extensive reef with gullies and bommies that range from 3-9 metres and is beautiful snorkling territory. However, I was really struggling wth my bottom times even though I was fishing my normal aspetto as I was just about pinging 1min10. I don't know whether my fitness has dropped hugely or I was in fact tiring my self out in the current, I don't know but when your bottom times are 50% lower than they have been all season, it is something to think about.

Despite this, I was drifting over a few shelves and looked down into a gravel patch where there was a decent pollock sitting. A quiet duck dive later the pollock was going bezerk on the spear. As soon as this happened a lunker of a pollock drifted in to investigate. I made a mental note of the hole it had dissapeared into but on closer inspection there were at least half a dozen escape holes. Gutted, my chance of a large pollock had gone! I carried on with the drift and after a longer surface interval I felt good enough to extend the bottom time. I was sitting in the kelp bed with my eyes scanning every direction when from my left side, in a gulley, two huge heads appeared in the gloom that slowly materalised as two big pollock. I had the choice of both as they slowly drifted past before I (hope) sending the steel through the larger, lead fish.

Again, I love having a reel. The fish bolted despite a very good holding shot through the shoulder and empitied the reel swimming around a bommie and into a thick kelp bed. I had no idea whtehr the fish was still on the end of the spear or not. tracking 20 metres of line in the gloom is difficult, especially when swimming through a huge overhang straight into thick kelp. I dispatched the fish before removing the spear out and returning to the surface.

I was happy with my two fish so I put the gun on the dive hunter and took some photos with my mates underwater camera that I will post later. The fished weighed in at 6lb4oz (post-gutting) and the larger weighed in at 10lb2oz (with guts as I knew it was going to be close)! My first double!! Happy days!

I will post the pictures of it being weighed in a day or two when my friend emails me the photos. It will be my first FotM entry aswell when I get the photo of it being weighed!

I have not been in since catching the fish due to work and poor weather. I think the next time I will be in will be Christmas time for some shellfish so happy with the end to my season!
