Shark attack in Australia

This incident occured at a time when fishing for reef finfish is prohibited due to spawning activity. This is to protect the spawning aggregations from commercial fishing, and targeted recreational fishing.
A lot of spearos use this time to target pelagics (which are still allowed) as the spawning activity attracts all manner of large predators. Including sharks.
I dived for two days during one of these closures, and fish activity was certainly higher than later on in the trip. We dived marine reserves, so no spearing was done.
Obviously its hard to say at this stage wether or not this kind of natural phenomenom increases risk to a diver, but its worth considering.
The victim was a mate of a member of my spearfishing club, so the tragedy has really hit home.
