I ve been to sharm four times the sea and its life is brill totally fab from far out to steeping off a hotel jetty on to a house reef .But beware it is a north African country expect standards to match the environment .You will or have a good chance of getting an upset stomach n care should be taken with everything you eat or drink .stick to hot cooked food only drink from bottled sealed water and wipe the tops .shy away from salads and ice if you can the more you spend on the holiday should improve the quality of you hols in most respects.saying that the last weeks diving hols I had was in one of the cheapest hotels in sharm.we all survived .The service you get can be some off the best around the world .lots of normal day to day people are very poor.drinking water and full factor sun cream are 1st on your list every day.
For scuba - get on a livaboard.

If your obsessed with diving ya its the way to go , but it can be quite intense doing four + dives a day .I'd do one again tomorrow if I could .its nice to be on dry land and see some sights soak up the rays n chill ( Um cook )out a bit.on a live a board you get access to the best of the best before the day boats arrive.
been twice, its fantastic, beautiful clear warm waters, loads of sealife.... still havent seen a big shark/ manta or whale shark yet, but thats a good enough reason to go back... hopefully next year...
We've been twice to Sharm, once to Sharks Bay and Nabq Bay. It has been great both times. Always great weather, and even in January, the temperature never dropped below 22 degrees.
Most hotels have thier own beach with a pontoon to reach the coral reefs and the drop-off. I did some freediving and scuba diving over there. The first time you dive on the coral reef is amazing. It really is just like a giant aquarium, and the viz is just epic. If you're scuba quailified, you need to get out on a day boat to some of the offshore reefs that haven't been ruined by tourists. The wreck of the Thistlegorm is a few hours boat ride away, but definatly worth doing.
I would recommend to get a hotel well outside of Naama Bay, unless you like a manic nightlife full of Russians (think Blackpool on LSD). Most hotels in Sharm run a free shuttle bus there anyway. As said before, drink and brush your teeth with bottled water, stay away from ice at the bar and the salads. Haggle in all the shops. Tip the waiters a few quid at the start of your stay. They will then be your best mates, and normally give you better service (the service is pretty good anyway, but they do the extra mile)

on the spearfishing note... the area is a no take,no touch zone... the local bedouins are allowed to fish for food, but no other fishing is allowed....
