Basically it absorbs the shock of the spear being shot and also absorbs shock of a speared fish diving down. Because of the elasticity of the rubber used it reduces the wear/damage to the mono/nylon used. It depend on your setup as to what would happen if you didn't use one, if you have a high powered gun (double banded etc) then after a few trips you may lose your spear because the the spear will try to continue to travel once the mono is tight causing the mono to stretch and eventually weaken through fatigue.
