I came across this article about oxygen transport, associated diseases and breathing exercises that can help with them.
DR. CHENEY: Increase Your Oxygen Intake - Weil Breathing Technique Improves 2,3 DPG Function

It mentions a method that can simulate the effects of living at altitude.
Just thought I'd share it and see if anyone has a had a go at altitude training for freediving?
  1. Inhale through your nose for four seconds
  2. Hold your breath for seven seconds
  3. Exhale through tightly pursed lips, creating "back pressure," for eight seconds.
  4. Do this eight times, twice a day, everyday.

I don't see how this simulates altitude?

Also the fact that it's a concept by Dr. Andrew Weil makes me less likely to think it's valid.

Neither do I but someone may find it useful, if nothing else as a breathing exercise to relax.

:) twice a day and eight breaths. Thats actually very good to do, and quite a smart idea by this doctor. But the method and benefits have been known for 1000´s of years. Why not go straight to the source = YOGA.

Breathing in freediving

Thinking of it - I actually did this kind of breathing while climbing in Himalaya. But lots more than 8 breaths to even partly counter the effects of high altitude.

Here is a freediver that has been to 8000 meter

This guy also likes climbing
