Today a missed a freediving session due to sinus pain and congestion. Usually in the case I get out the neti pot and do stream treatments with some essential oils; that is, I tend to be reactive. But I wonder if there is a way to be more proactive -- some natural sinus and ear care routine that would help prevent this in the first place. Does anyone have any advice or techniques that work for them? What kind of treatments do you do, how often, and how well do they work?

I have had sinusitis all my life. It has ruined my diving for long stretches over the last 40 years. The doctor put me on a nasal spray daily and after a year the sinusitis has almost disappeared. Before that, I used a net pot daily and it helped. The old 'ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure'. Metrically speaking, 67 grams=one kilo.

Ear care routine ; do non stop equalise for few seconds example 8 sec..
Start with a soft blow equalise, medium and finally strong one.
Do it daily and your ET and all the ear muscles will get stronger.

FLUTICASONE PROPIONATE I didn't answer because I thought it was a prescription drug. It is now over the counter and the big caveat is, it took two years to work fully. I still recommend seeing a doctor first. I went from being unable to dive below 40 meters for months at a time (because of the pressure required to clear the sinuses) to last week where I made numerous scooter dives to 25 meters, hands free, after a good warm up and a 70 meter sinus clearing dive.

Thanks Bill!

I use the same thing for years. Started off with different over-the-counter sprays which seemed to dry out my sinuses and ended using this. The name of the medicine I use is Flixonase, never had issues using it but it does not have the instant effect other sprays commonly have.

Have you thought about diet as well?
avoiding milk and lactose products 24 hrs before a dive to reduce mucus production and drinking things such as ginseng tea to clear the sinuses?
