What`s the general verdict on this island ? Is it as monsieur Cousteau described or just a shadow of its former self? The reason why I ask is that I`m recently qualified and heading there in August so apart from the PADI course in Egypt its my first outing...
Thanks
Graham:eek:

I was last diving Sipadan in 1998, before the hostage-taking. The diving is truly world-class - the drop-off, just in front of the Borneo Divers' operation is breath-taking and the sheer bio-diversity is well worth thr trip. Sharks abound, chevron baracudas school in their hundreds, and turtles get in the way...seriously!
I too went to Sipadan having dived for years in the Red Sea - you won't be disappointed with the diving (though the island itself wasn't doing so well 5 years ago - the environmental impact of so many visitors was begining to show).

Sipadan is an excellent place to dive, IMO one of the best in Asia. Don't be put off by stories of kidnappings, there is now a full time military guard on the island next to Borneo divers in the old PB [sadly now gone] dive shop. Sipadan has outstanding marine life, in fact it is better now than when Cousteau first saw it, as the dynamite and cyanide fishing methods by the locals that was once common around the island has now been curtailed. Mabul, next door to Sipadan has some of the best macrophotograpy in the region, dozens of different species of nudibranch, Mandarin fish, Leafy Dragons, Seahorses etc etc. The environmental problem mentioned in the previous post, was caused by one of the locally owned dive shops, they pumped their salty waste water from their RO plant back into the aquifyer. Divers on the island are now limited by Malasian government decree. The diving can be spectacular and there is something for everyone shallow or deep. Don't miss it. Layang Layang off the west coast is also very good and shouldn't be missed if you are in the area.

August weather in Sipadan?

I also am going to try to get to Sipadan in August. Does anybody have info on the weather/dive conditions at that time of year. Also, any info on the logistics of getting there from Singapore would be greatly appreciated. Thanks:cool:

Hi, The weather on Sipadan during August is probably much like Singapore, perhaps a little cooler in the evenings, the days will be warm and humid. As there are no typhoons in Sabah you will not get heavy rains. Vis should be around 15 meters +. Best bet is to fly up to Kota Kinabalu [KK] and then take a local flight to Tawau or Semporna. You could try contacting the following site http://www.borneowetnwild.com/
This site has good info and you can book through these people or get more information. Sipadan has some of the best diving in Asia enjoy...:)
