Snorkeler looking to try spearfishing

Longtime snorkeler, just for fun, whereever I happen to be-recently US virgins and Greece. But I'm interested in trying spearfishing. Is there a course I need to take? A license I need to get?
My goal is to go spearfishing on my next holiday in Greece. Unfortunately, I am solo and the rest of the family isnt into spearing. Spear trips in Greece are not cheap, >$500. Too bad there isnt an app like airBNB for people that want to spear together.

I am sure if you look for ways to spend money you may find courses to take and licences to buy.

In 2017 when I was visiting Crete I did not need any kind of licence. Also did not need to book a spearfishing trip on Crete because water was everywhere and it is free. I am solo spearfisher, never have buddied up with anyone, when I speared as kid or later when connected with this sport about 10 years ago. Always by myself. This is controversial topic, but if you were snorkelling for a while, you will do fine, it is same thing but with gun and fish for dinner.
