Is there any information out there on the use of snus or other smokeless tobaccos and freediving ability? I've been out of the water a long time now and developed a bit of a habit and want to know if there will be any noticeable difference or something I should be aware of before getting back in again.

I'll let the scientists reply on exactly how orally absorbed nicotine can affect freediving ability.

However, I will say that one of my freediving buddies can smoke the "good stuff" (wacky tobacky) daily and still freedive in the 60-70m range with bi-fins and pull 3min dives to 30m spearfishing! :) :friday

Atomichaggis,

Welcome back.

Looks like nobody knows much, so, why don't you track your training for a while and see whether you can come up with anything for the rest of us. ; )

I've done a few dry breathholds whist using snus and it actually seemed to help... but that was with a strong portion under my lip which makes for super relaxation, the result would probably change as soon as it came out tho.
I still haven't gone near the water as it will barely get above -15C for some time. turning out to be a chilly year already.

Davie,

If possible, can you monitor heartrate and blood pressure as you play with the effects?

HR should be easy, although bp might not.

I can relate to the temperature issue. The water was 0.5 to 1.5C on Friday, and the air was pretty chilly, too.

Howard

I can monitor my HR but not BP... Snus is known to constrict blood vessels and raise BP tho. Shall post findings :)
