South Devon 2013

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I will give you a call if i get in Alastair.Im usualy busy weekends but may get a morning free.
Thanks Scott. Still waiting on the insurance. They have had all the details and a quote, now today they have ask for pics. Trouble is once i have that i dont dive, fish instead.
That place is shit place to dive its more of a training dive. Yes it did almost do me in walking up the mountain track. Not the best of spots for early season.
When you going to have a walk down there for a dive?

Been watching the swell forcast all week and today was ment to be the best of the week. Add some nice shiny sun for a little warmth and a sheltered cove with a offshore wind and you have a dive on your hands
Driving along the cliff road i could see the sea,it had that lovely blue colour. Far better than yesterday. I had arranged to meet a mate who had seen the nice weather in the morning and took a half day.
I arrived about 5mins before him and started to get change. I was almost ready when he turned up. I waited for him to get ready which wasnt long. He forgot his suit!! I did what any good mate would of done,i carried on with out him. He was keen and raced off home for his suit. Over a hour round journey.
There was little if any waves breaking on the beach. It also looked very clear in close. That first 10 mins is a pain getting with ice cream head out of the way. The vis was a good 5m in close but down to about 3m further out. Lots of dives later and lots of ground covered with only a wrasse and a conger seen holed up i came upon a nice big lobster sat well out of his hole. A few moments later and he was in my net bag. Lucky i took it. I did think i wouldnt need it today and almost left it behind.
About 20mins after the Lobster i found the only plaice of the day. Just over 2 lbs,a nice meal size.
Nothing more seen because the cold was starting to get the better of me. It was only 6 c today. The lobster was 4lb 2oz.
My mate was just on his way out when i was going in. He didnt get anything. The vis changed for the worse with the rising tide.

Not for a few more months mate, Ive only dived it a few times and that was at the end of the season.

You off to a cracking start now !!!!!

Struggling mate. Im half way through the lobster and needed time out. Got to eat him all tonight or i cant sleep thinking off him down stairs in the fridge.
Yes good start so. I hope it last.

Guys

If anyone has viz reports for Salcombe round to bigbury area, can they update me please. Might try tomorrow (mon) looking like slight NW so should be sheltered, cams show calm conditions but can't tell on the viz.
Watching esturaries spew out over last few months - Teign & Exe. Just a sea of red spewing from the Exe turning brown in towards Teignmouth. Just a thin grey line out on the horizon!! Desperate times, been like this since early Autumn.

Also guys do any of the South Devon boys bother with a national trust membership?
I'm solely thinking about it for the parking mainly around south hams as last year was chased for parking charges ranging from £2 - £7.50 total rip off but they had you as there wasn't anywhere else to park without a big hike.
£40 by Direct D but areas usually only manned easter to Autumn half term. Would you spend £40 on charges? not sure but it's the thought of handing over £7.50 each time to park on an old dirt track with a crappy old toilet.

As you can see frustration starting to kick in, need a good season.

good day all

lee

Lee there is no vis down that way its the colour of tea. Those southerlies the other night put an end to it.

I avoid the charges by getting there early and getting one of the few free parking spots. Places that charge the earth like national trust car car parks I avoid all together. Like you said its a longer hike but when you've already paid 15 quid in fuel the last thing you want is paying over priced parking.

Thanks Scott
Was going to try a couple new spots for me but will leave.
Looking out of teignmouth there is one hell of a lot of murky water to be dispersed. Viz Is never great at the best of times. Will need to catch up when season starts to take off.

Cheers for reply
Lee

I look forward to it Lee. Will be doing a Lot of early morning dives if that suites you?

When you consider the amount of rain that fell last year and the quantities of silt washed into the sea .and we have a lot of rivers around here , there must be an awful lot of silt settled around here that will ruin the vis after any choppy spell . I think headlands will be the places to find vis and in Cornwall especially the north shore which I will be heading for more than usual this year . Lets just keep our fingers crossed for some decent weather !!!

Scrumpy , I was at a National Trust property today and a new thing this year is a type of membership that allows parking at their sites but not entrance to buildings and gardens etc for £28 .... worth looking at ... I know quite a few surfers who are members just for parking at Godrevy ( near St Ives )

Terry

Give that man a star prize!!! Was this in the house itself as can't see it on the web site? I can then phone them up and say where it was on offer.

Cheers
Lee

I am not sure of all details but I think at car parks where you pay someone in a little hut , it is available only there and NOT at properties . The car park at East Portlemouth would probably be a good example ! Will probably be at more N.T. places this week ( delivering easter eggs !! ) so will try and find out more ...Terry ...

Scrumpy, was at NT again today Holywell Bay ( cornwall ) ..... go online to :nationaltrust.org.uk /lovemyoutdoors or 0844 249 1895 and it is £36 per annum. .. or £3 per month dd... I do not use NT car parks much but the council ones are just as dear !!! but like Scott says there are spots for free but you need to get there early ( but they are secret spots just like fishing spots !! ha ha ! )... Terry...

Ok chaps,

Having just got back from 25 degrees plus on a daily basis in Australia, with beautiful calm, clear seas to good old blighty and ''spring''???!!? I am not too keen on hopping straight back into the sea but the freezer is empty and the wife is keen for more fish ASAP. I know the weather is/has been against me but is anyone able to point me in the direction of any possible vis in the Torbay area?

Cheers

Nick

Welcome back Nick. Torbay has zero vis from all the easterlies what about Dorset way?

Planning a dip on late Thursday afternoon, will try the coast somewhere between Thurlestone and Plymouth. Not being cryptic about location, just won't decide until I leave work!
Will post the massive success of clear vis and abundant fish Im sure to encounter. Ha, ha.

Cheers Scott,

Yeah I think Dorset will be my best bet, I did post over in that threat too so hopefully someone will give me the heads up. Might just brave it and go for a drive to see what I find!

Can't believe how cold it is for end of March, wasn't it 20 degrees this time last year?

Hosepipe bans and flip flops this time last year now its bloody freezing

I was staying with a mate in Australia who moved over there 18 months ago. The day I left it was drizzling with rain but the temp was still 16 degrees...his parting words to me were..''this weather today is as bad as it gets here in winter''....I gave him a one word answer that started with ''bast'' and ended with ''ard''!!

Must be killing you been back in Sunny blighty lol. This time next month we will be in the fish. My freezer is bare of fish at the mo......

Keep us informed Dai Asbo. Was planning to take the kayak out for a quick dip on Saturday but might be safer in front of the TV with the wind and drop in temperature.
