South Devon 2013

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
If its any help, I went past Whitsand Bay today. Low tide, but the viz looked awful, about a metre I reckon heading out to Rame Head. Stay at home Scott!

Must be killing you been back in Sunny blighty lol. This time next month we will be in the fish. My freezer is bare of fish at the mo......

Yeah I normally wear shorts all year round but since coming back I have worn trousers more times than I can remember for all of last year! My freezer is empty too. Just seen a photo that Dario Deli posted on facebook - his freezer is definitely not empty!!

Got in earlier today, in the water just before 5pm with a calm sea and incoming tide. Vis was patchy but good enough to have been worth getting in and ranged generally between 2 - 4 meters. Water was 7 degrees and took its toll on the finger tips which took a good while to recover after! I have 5mm gloves and 3mm socks - feet were fine though?!!
In at Thurlestone and within 10 meters of setting off and in 2 meters of water I and my buddies all reported being passed by swift moving silver fish - and LOADS of them. This was a brief encounter and too quick to have established what they were and whether or not they were sizeable enough to shoot given the vis - no target presented to line up a shot so just enjoyed the sight of silver fish being back. Thought this was a good start to the dive and it was....but was as good as it got. No other signs of life seen over the next hour and a bit but come away satisfied to have been in (once the hands thawed out).
This time last year the same spot had loads of spider crabs but none seen.
Things starting to look up!!

Forgot to mention - also tested out new float line set up having taken ideas from other threads which worked well for me. Thanks to Johnny 250, Scrumpy and Scoobaru for inspiration.

hi guys check out Dorset thread . i have posted a pic i think u guys would like and a good debate going about it

Watched over the years. no go for a long time I think!!! Spearolee just about where you entered the water mate, when you raided us poor devon boys!!

Herald express report

Oddicombe beach closed off after landslip | This is South Devon

Can anyone (mirror) you're a good bet check sea conditions thurlestone way/bigbury if you're over that way. Everywhere else no go for me and don't fancy travelling any further until some fish reports start coming in.

Lee

Have to say it looks tempting. No fish down there anyway or pettitor. Only big seals with man eating intentions

I took this yesterday before the rest came down. The red rock off little Oddicimbe has split in to 3 pieces also. On the plus side its created more reef and made it very difficult to shore fish. Not that there are any fish, only seals

Scottwilson will be on it like a tramp on chips. The mullet lover

He loves sticking his head in the chum line after a few mullet to trade on for a Chinese.

Haha!!!! No mullet is safe with me in the water. Hopes nose will be teaming with shit shovelers by the time the viz clears to half a meter then its party time at the squatter camp!!!!!

Just in case anyone needs it. Zero viz Salcombe & Thurlestone. Water cold & worse getting out with wind chill. Drove home in my suit!!

In preparation for the new season, I have some money burning a hole in my pocket and feel like splashing out on some new toys.
I have decided to buy a Banks Board as I like the additional safety, and hopefully speed, of spearing with one.

After going snorkelling in NZ with normal fins it brought home just how much power you get from long blades. I currently dive with Mares Razors and think an upgrade to either fibreglass or carbon might add an extra zing to my finning.
I mainly do shore dives (a bit from Kayaks and going to try from my new SUPboard soon).
Do any of you guys on here have recommendations of which to go for? My 2-3year old blades are a bit scratched up, but I was learning through that time. Would fibreglass be a bit more hardy to the conditions around the South Hams etc? Is carbon worth the extra or will I just damage them too quickly?

Been looking at the range at Fins4u but would appreciate if anyone has any other recommendations

Any opinions gratefully received

Nice one on the Banks Board. I have one myself in white. I also got the additional back pack harness, which IMO you probably do not need, as I found it a bit difficult storing it away inside the dry hatch. I just use the harness that came with & add some pipe insulation & tape it up, does the trick. I have also modded the board with some Diamond night illuminating tape & lacquered them up, & looks great when the torch is shone upon it.
You may also need to add a door knob(white on photo) to the lid of the dry compartment as it seals quite well & sucks down quite firmly. I have my dive flag attached to an old fishing rod as i lost my previous rod & flag when I dropped the board into the sea & it popped out, I probably didn't secure it properly. Also a wire coat hangar sticking out of the top of the rod & through the top of the seam in the flag.

Link below on a couple of pictures I posted last year:

http://forums.deeperblue.com/uk-ireland/93517-dorset-spear-fishing-2012-a-128.html#post895205

I also have some fins4u & I have no problems with them, I have a size 9 foot & use 3mm neoprene socks got a 43-44(9-10) & is a bit tight. I am using 44-46(10-12?) with 7 mm socks for night dives at the moment & they fit nicely & not too tight.I have the Stereo Blades & although scratched a little are nice a lot better & lighter than my plastic long blades. I have given them grief, & seem ok at the moment.

Hopefully my pointers may help you out.

Any one interested in going to this? It's just been passed to me.
Regards
Nick

Unfortunately our remit does not cover organising workshops in Wales or Northern Ireland.

Each workshop will run from 6-9 pm and a buffet meal and refreshments will be provided. We will reimburse reasonable travel costs (by car or standard class public transport), as well as providing a cash incentive of £20 for your attendance. We would be grateful if you can let us know which meeting you are able to attend.

The main aim of the workshops is to understand in more detail the benefits that the UK marine environment provides and the values that you place on it. Your responses will provide important information to decision-makers on how divers/anglers value their environment and how they make trade-offs between different things that they value. The workshop and survey outputs will help inform decisions about the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the UK, as well as providing the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC), the Angling Trust (AT) and Marine Conservation Society (MCS) with baseline information on the importance of UK marine environments to their members so that they can better represent your values. The results will also be used in the UK National Ecosystem Assessment (NEA), which is a national research programme to better understand the importance of nature to people. You will be able to receive a copy of the final report by email.

The workshops will revolve around your input and sharing ideas with other divers and anglers – we will not be lecturing! Each workshop will involve:
· An introduction to the project and the proposals for marine protected areas
· An exercise to understand and share your personal values relating to the marine environment
· Opportunities to discuss with other divers and anglers what aspects of the different types of UK seas and coastlines are most important to you
· Discussion of the various benefits that these different settings provide to understand the choices and trade-offs you make when valuing them
· Evaluating how effective you feel the different methods used in the two workshops are at representing your values and views

The results of the online Marine Values survey have been extremely interesting, giving a broad outline of the individual values of divers and anglers. The workshops will provide us with more in-depth knowledge, and will also allow us to look at shared values between the sea-angling and diving communities. We are currently analysing responses to the online survey and a report on the findings will be available in late March on our project website: www.marinevalues.org. The report incorporating online survey and workshop information will be available as part of the UK National Ecosystem Assessment report, which will be published in early 2014.

While we are working with BSAC, AT and MCS to make this work as relevant as possible, our research is independent and the University of Aberdeen does not have a position on the introduction of MPAs. Conclusions drawn from the data gathered in the workshops will not be influenced or moderated by anyone apart from the University researchers involved, and individual data gathered will be used anonymously and will not be shared with anyone else.

We would be delighted to see you at one of these workshops. Please respond as soon as possible, as places are limited. To reserve a place, please let us know via email or phone.

Yours sincerely,

Jasper Kenter
