Happy New Year everyone! Is anyone venturing out for the first dip of the year?
 
A bit late, but happy new year too!!
No plans as such but keen to get back in the water, increased hours of daylight would help.
Should be getting new fins next month and hope to do my 3* this year to explore greater depths. I'm sure we're all after a better season this year if the weather treats us kindly!
 
Anyone been in or know of any viz.
Reported viz at Brixham by local divers but others say not?
 
Still not been in but hoping to get in within a couple of weeks now. Booked up my AIDA 3* for the summer which I'm looking forward to.
Just got a copy of Great British Marine Animals by Paul Naylor as have been looking for something with relevance to our shores and creatures within it to understand more about the underwater world. Great book with plenty of info and pictures of individual species to satisfy curiosity and identify what the most common of them are. Sponges, anemones, starfish, coral, crabs, fish etc etc etc.......
 
Brrrr, it was a bit chilly out there today. We dived a shallow bay, going after scallops, and a lead pick on the way back in. The water temperature is about 8-9 degrees, so as it was only the second dive of the year we stayed in for an hour and a half. The viz was atrocious, no more than a metre, and very silty. We managed sixteen scallops between us, so it was worth freezing for.

Viz at brixham and parts of the bay, beacon cove, meadfoot & babbacombe. Anyone know if any around blackpool sands or start bay please
 
Happy belated new year to all.

I've been of the boards and out of the water as I've been laid up, a pair of knee operations and I'm learning to walk again and still on the painkillers... Not pleasant. Anyway I'm looking forward to an epic year, and will be doing a try dive fairly soon to see how I hold up! Nearly spider season too!

Anyone been in recently? And anyone want to share a scallop mark that might have a small amount of Viz too!!!
 
Planning first dive of the year Friday morning. Don't expect much but will be good to get back in after a long break.
 
Good 3m + beacon cove - Meadfoot milky - good viz reported brixham - slapton way looks flat, viz ?
teignmouth dawlish still no viz
 
Start Bay was lovely and flat today but viz looked terrible. Anyone getting wet anywhere?
 
Been in a couple times after 6 months out of the water, lobster, crabs and couple of flatties. Was thinking beesands but maybe not worth the drive. Might try local but viz ?? Iffy this morning.

Start bay was blown out because of the easterlies, but the very South Coast between start point and prawle was sheltered today with 4m of vis. Nothing edible seen underwater but a large shoal of mullet seen from the surface so will be heading back over the next few days. Nice to be finally back in....

First dive of year. Hooray!

Babbacombe was cold, with milky vis 2-3m.

Didn't see anything fishy apart from a few small wrasse. The jet ski's probably had something to do with that.

Would any jet skiers reading this please show a little consideration and use them AWAY from the shore!
 
As I'm stuck in work today on the best day of the bank holiday, I might as well put up a report from yesterdays dive.
Two members of Team CRAP trekked down the cliff to one of our favourite lobster spots looking to bag some bugs. The water looked good from the cliff top, and once in, the viz varied from 1m to 5m. It was dead low tide, so I wasn't expecting great things The surface was flat, but there was a bit of swell washing things about. Temperature was no more than 8-9 degrees.

Five minutes in and I stabbed a Plaice in 2m of water. We looked for more flatties, but that was the only one around. After that, the only fish we saw were a school of small mullet, and a couple of snoozing Bullhuss. The crabs were about, but were either too small, or too deeply holed to reach in and pull out. Our hands were cold so getting a grip was a problem. Rowan found a big lobster on the swim back in, and a battle of wits ensued. I wasn't sure who would win, but after a couple of minutes out popped the bug. The grin on Rowans face disappeared as soon as he saw it was berried, so after a dive back down to put her back in the hole, we finned in. We trudged the mile back to the car for coffee and chocolate with only one flatfish to show for our effort.

Hi everyone. Just bought a second hand Suunto D3 with button missing has anyone
got a spare? Thought my D3 days were over so chucked my old broken one away
very annoying.

I visited a remote South Cornish headland this morning, looking to catch some Plaice. Viz was about 6-7m, but quite a way offshore, as close in was very murky. The fish didn't show until I was diving at least 12m, so they were staying out deep on the falling tide. I took three, an left a couple others. There were lots of really big cuttlefish about, so I had one of those too. Water temperature was 10-11 degrees. I didn't feel cold in my 5mm.

I'm hoping the sea 'll stay clear enough for me to get in some time next week. I'd love a fresh BBQ'd cuttlefish!
 
As the wind has shifted today I took a trip to East Cornwall for a scallop hunt. The viz was reported 10m but because of the change in wind, it was reduced to 4m. I took the kayak out and I'm glad I did. I haven't dived this patch for a couple of years and it was a bonanza. At least 3-4 scallops per dive. The best was 8 scallops in one dive! I could have done 9 but I ran out of hands. 11 deg water temp, strong breeze from the East and the bloom is starting up.
