South Devon 2015

Wow! That's a haul! I'm looking for a new scallop mark you'll have to tell me all your secrets lol!

Anyone willing to share some dive sites for when the wind is easterly?

I'm in Starcross just outside Exeter.

Plymouth and Salcombe areas look like they could be ok...

I'm tempted by trying the Exe estuary at a slack high. Anyone tried this before?

Thanks, Andy.

Andy, look at Google maps and look around from lannacombe to bigbury and beyond. Areas facing an easterly will nearly always be churned up, odd times parts of the bay are still diveable but not many. Hope cove, thurlestone particularly sheltered but I dived there last night but a westerly swell was still causing problems and made entry and exit dangerous + no viz, wasted trip.
Salcombe headland areas are good but judge the tide right, 1 Hour slack then 1 hour movement ok either side but then too much volume of water moving. This will be the same with any esturary, the teign is hardly ever clear and certainly not with easterlies blowing in, so the Exe would be the same. Look for remote areas where you might have to trek a bit. Places like thurlestone can be ok but too many state where they've been and taken fish, many times we have seen 6-8 spearos in the water there and not doing us any favours, taking small fish and WORSE exiting the water with loaded guns!!!!!!
Show off your fish by all means, but disguise the location and obviously don't post where you were, unless in a PM with someone.
PM me if you need further advice areas etc. I mainly do solo night dives now as it suits family life.

Andy, Lee is right, google maps is a great starting place, I've had my best catches on random 'explore' days...!

Thanks for the advise.

I've spent many a hour searching for spots on google maps - I'd noticed a lot of the pics are take when the water is clear, allowing us to see the underwater topography (thank you google!)

Vis seems to be the biggest limiting factor to diving in the uk. A shame really.
Lets hope we get another clear spell before the bloom!

Give a shout on here, guys always report viz if they can. Search places out from Google maps and search that area on a search engine. I.e fishing hope cove etc,
Incoming tide usually best for viz and fish. If your unsure how to get to places like lannacombe , parts of salcombe etc again, post on here and someone will reply. I'm pretty good on south Devon areas, trelawney always a good bet for plymouth way. There is always someone to ask. Try to find spots yourself, as there is no one good spot. Usually it's what your doing wrong or just inexperience, why you may not see fish. I went two years before taking my first decent bass, I know what it's like but keep going as every dive your learning the art of spearing.
Slowly it will all come together and you'll start taking fish on most dives, we all still have bad days. Remember that .

Cheers

With the wind in the East I took a trip to my Plaice place; a nice sheltered cove in West Cornwall.
The viz was about 7m on an ebbing tide, just enough to make out the reef from the surface. The first metre had a lot of green algae bloom in large clumps and a fine sediment type algae. This cleared up a lot below 2m. The first fish taken was a Flounder in about 10m, then I found a decent Plaice snugged into a gulley. The third flounder I shot whilst it was swimming, but the flopper didn't do its job and it came off. I tried to follow it, but it was gone. I saw a large Mullet on the way back in, and some medium Pollock, but no Bass showed up. Water was still 11 degrees.

Just wondering as I live in salcombe... A bit of a newbie, any good spots in that area?

Thanks

Ryan

Hi welcome to the forum. I see your looking at south devon 2014 that's the best thing to do, read up on catch reports, fish taken or missed, places dived etc. salcombe has loads of spots around you mate, as my previous posts and other spearos have mentioned, study Google maps. There isn't one good spot but anywhere along the coastline near you will produce fish. Learning the art of spearing, will take time but keep going, it will all start to come together. If you want PM me and can discuss areas worth a dive. If you dive near the esturary remember you have 2 hours approx either side of high / low before the volume of water makes it dangerous. Never reveal your spots if you take fish, as mentioned above.

Thanks, will have a look on google maps tonight then, and will hopefully try some spots when the weather brightens up. I was going to go on a dive this afternoon but the wind kicked in and didn't look particularly safe unfortunately as it was flat this morning.

Just read your updates, bloom was building around salcombe end of last week. Which will kill any viz but should clear quite quickly. Teignmouth way looking clearer but will be affected soon. as mentioned don't throw up places as many will desend on the area, also fisherman will see your posts etc. post reports by all means, giving rough areas ( salcombe / South hams etc ) and how the dive went. It's not all about the fish you took, sometimes it's great just to read about your dive and experience you gained. If you do ask about an area, ask guys to PM you, rather than announce for all to see. Finally study maps but also sites like magic seaweed / windguru for salcombe and learn what wind direction best suits your dive site and whether you need to head further along the coast for shelter.

Thanks for the advice mate, will take those rules into consideration. Next time I'm thinking about going out I'll PM one of you for advice (if needed). Hopefully I'll be able to post catch reports as well!

Haven't been down this week, lee said bloom was building around bigbury last week. Reports on uk viz reported the same as Monday. Patchy between teignmouth and the bay. Dawlish brown and not looking good after tomorrow night as SE/E due.

Just back from local spot. Viz 0.5 - 1m very murky and bloom building. Looked Good this morning. Had 3 bass swim pass and managed to track this one in the gloom. 3lb with the others 4-5lb but couldn't hunt them down. Not a lot of life tonight. Photo doesn't want to loads, I'll try again tomorrow.

Hi, I used to be a regular poster on here but since becoming a Dad, spearfishing trips have been few and far between. I'm determined to share my catches this year as and when I do get in and it is good to see the bass are around. I'm heading up to North Devon for a long weekend and was thinking of getting in the water. I'm going to be close to Bideford so was wondering if anyone might know a decent spot to try and where I might find some viz? Maybe Clovelly area? There doesn't seem to be a North Devon forum?
