In last night first time for ages.
best bass from the night touching 7lb. Huge belly filled with masses of bait fish, at a guess 100+ never seen anything like it. flat calm and expecting good viz, what a shocker. Viz 0 in places to 2 at best, very murky. Scratching my head the whole dive, it soon came apparent. As i rounded the headland on my mile trek back there it was, huge piles of rubble and dirty sand. Network rail were dredging the beach and shoreline. 2 diggers and 3 quarry trucks were working through the night. i'd passed prior to them starting work as they needed a receding tide. Amazing to think nearly a year on and they're still working on the sea wall. last laugh for me though as the security guy joked ' you picked the wrong beach tonight mate, i replied ' nah, look whats on my stringer!!!

Also some big spiders and a few brown around

struggling to upload photo, will keep trying.

Dai I would like to know if it is any good as I want to donut as well thanks

Alastair - I'd never thought of posting if anyone fancied signing up for the course from here. Shame, could have been a laugh with another local Spearo. Sorry!!!

Lee - good report mate and catch.

James - will do.

With all the interest in the course am going to feel like a right prick if I fail :$ Just been through details again and is fairly intense, looking forward to experiencing 24+ meters down.

Pleasant dive first thing, poor vis but came away with a decent mullet.
Only one bass seen but couldn't be confident was legal so left be. That's it for spearing until post course.

Hi guys just wondering if there were any good spearfishing shops around the Plymouth are thanks

Not aware of any in Plymouth but probably the most popular shop used locally will be Venture Sports in Paignton, whose online shop is spearfishingstore.co.uk
Anthony who works there is very knowledgeable, helpful and always up for a chat!

A couple of us have just done the AIDA 1 and 2* with Freedive UK. I was really impressed about how much they understood where we were coming from as spearos. They gave me loads of useful tips which have helped my bottom times and helped keep everything as safe as possible with the diving. I went on a course with another company where they tolerated the fact that I'm spearing, but basically disapproved. Needless to say I didn't get much out of that and I didn't go back! I'm looking forward to the 3* when it arrives, Dai you'll have a blast.

I've been diving just north of torquay recently. Seen a few good bass but they are tricky to spot (vis <3m at best) and have been spooked easily (I think I need to get better at hiding!), so none have come home.
Around dusk has been even more frustrating as there are fish every where! Mackerel, polock, scad, bass, and others but the light and vis is so poor and they are all in such a frenzy I struggle big time!
I took a polock home today, but this was 'paid' for by giving my torch to the sea.
So, if anyone has any suggestions for a decent torch that won't break the bank please let me know. I'm thinking of a XTAR D26. Anyone got one of these?

Completed the 3* yesterday after a great 3 days, really enjoyed it. The course really focusses on developing the techniques taught in the 1+2* to freedive further and more confidently. I don't think I'll ever enjoy static apnea training but everything else was great fun. Dived to -25m and felt good on it, so confident that could handle greater depths and develop further. Has definitely developed confidence, showed efficient and safe practice and generally raised my ability - so ticks all boxes. Chuffed to have completed it - now to consider if I'll seek to do the 4* at some point, feels achievable and structured development has worked a treat. Practicing the buddy system was really helpful as helps develop your own ease at covering depth - I'll still continue to spear on my own but will buddy up for deeper dives whether spearing or freediving. In a nutshell I'd recommend doing it as very clear development from the 1+2*. Also dived Fraggle Rock while there for the hell of it - short cave / tunnel in front of the lighthouse was fun for a swim through.

Going to get into freediving more as a result if I can become less obsessed with catching fish. Or at least make sure I train for freediving more regularly and specifically.

Halfandy - XTAR D06 seems to be popular with spearos. I've got one based on advice from this forum but not really properly tested it. Seems spot on though.

Spearoeddy - go for it if you're thinking about it! Definitely spearo friendly

Thanks for the report on your course Dai , and well done ! 25 m sounds a bit scary ! did you see any fish at that depth ? not sure I know of any areas that I dive that are any where near that deep ( except further off shore I guess ) How long did the dive take you ? and was the vis any good ? I think nearly all spearos dive on their own most of the time and I think you may struggle to find anyone to buddy for you at those depths !!! Just free diving and not spearing or looking for shellfish will have limited appeal to me unless the vis is good and lots of interesting things to see but can see the obvious connection between the two disciplines .... Terry ...

Hi Terry, vis was dreadful generally. On the first set of dives on the first day it was very murky green in the Falmouth estuary. Worse at the top but could see the 20m mark from 15m down which was ok. On the last day and going for the 25m the vis was better, around 10m but we were in 41m of open water and nothing else to see. Didn't see anything at all when diving up and down the line, only when we did some shallower dives for fun. The dives don't take long, but weren't timed so hard to say. Probably not much more than 1 to 1.30 min. I agree with you that is more appealing to get fish / shellfish or at least see the underwater sights, but have definitely seen a place for training in less than good conditions to better help getting more fish /shellfish and seeing more underwater sights. That being said, have found descending down the line at increasing depths very satisfying and enjoyable. Back to spearfishing for the here and now though

Hi, in Torbay for the weekend visiting the parents... Anyone heading out for a dive today or tomorrow would be great to hear where/when as I should be able to get out . Last night it looked about 2m visa at Corbyn head end of torre abbey (I was only swimming for exercise, but didn't see any fish). Cheers Sam

I was tempted by a freediving course after reading Dai's positive reports, so I had a look at the freediveuk website.
£300 for 1+2* and £400 for the 3* and it seems much less tempting!

Anyone fancy setting up a dive school with me? Maybe we could start up an association of our own!!££!!

South Hams dive this afternoon on a very low tide, never seen it so low in the area I've dived a lot. Pretty uneventful on the whole, a few mullet here and there but did see some bream for the first time which was a pleasure and a shame too small. In the last half hour became surrounded by bass but all too small, great to see such numbers though which were completely unphased by my presence. Made my way back to shore to come across more bass and this time there was a taker among them, so took it.
