I got in down at Beer on the weekend - May water is definately in now and will take a few weeks to clear up properly. The sea bed is full of common starfish. Took a good size Cuttle and a smaller Plaice. No Bass or Mullet. very small Pollack and also no Wrasse yet - still very early for this bit of the coast.
Mackeral are being caught in small numbers and a long way out. Again we need to wait for a month or so before things will get better in this stretch.

The wetsuit I bought is wank and I have no idea why I even bought it. 7mm semi dry suit is just not designed for spearfishing. I spent 20 minutes in it on saturday and phoned to find out if I could send the suit back only to find out that since I have used the suite I cannot send it back. What a bummer. I think I will just stick to my surf suit for the rest of the year.

Scott you could wear a shorti over your surf suit at this time of year & a neoprene vest under your suit in the summer. Maybe you could sell the 7mm & get an off the shelf 5mm smooth skin, my bro paid £100 for his from scuberland.
to fat for the largest size. I have a eliose 5mm camo which I got for £130 on ebay includes a loading pad, really nice suit but to small for me so my diving buddys going to buy it off me . thats why I got the 7mm beaver suit as they come in loads of sizes, oh well you live and learn
I am 6'2" and 11 stone so have no hope of fitting a standard suit. I bought a custom suit from this guy:

Not many flat fish, more at babbacombe than oddicombe, Babbacombe is doing well with scallops crabs and lobsters and the odd flat fish. Also there is apparently a wreck at babbacombe ,have not found it yet, but that must be a fishy spot.
Lots of plankton in the water which is causing the bad viz.

1st dive of the year, dived Thurlestone today from low to mid water. There was a slight swell running but viz was ok 3-4 metres and a bit milky. A few pollack sighted but not much else. Only stayed an hour. New ear works well but must get some socks without holes, my toes got cold too quick.
On a 'strange but true' tip, I spent the 1st hour spinning for bass/pollack/whatever from the rocks (it was such a long walk at low tide to check the viz I thought I might as well take the rod). On one retrieve I witnessed a 4-5lb ballan wrasse chase my lure right up to my feet! As far as I know they don't eat fish and can only guess it was being territorial or something? Anyone heard of this behaviour?

spiderman I looked at that site. Have you bought from them before and if so how long did it take and whats the posting costs like
do you guys go spearing on your own or do you always go with somebody, i live around brighton and cannot always find other people to go with.
Half and half for me. My dive buddy works nights so during the week Im on my own. I find I get more kills when Im on my own. it is more enjoyable with a buddy though.
I've got a suit from Spiros (diveskin) and for the money I can't fault it at all. Used it all last year and its still fine, even if I have now covered it in paint! He's got another site here: Oceanos wetsuits

Wrasse regularly take lures, its fairly common to get them on plugs that fish deep.

Quite often go solo myself. But then you always have that buddy 'common sense' with you. If you don't feel right or uneasy, stop, trust your instinct.
I have never dived solo... but then thats not to say i never would. If the conditions are right, and my buddy is unavailable, then i would go, but would probably stick to shallow surface stalking... some of my best fish have been had this way, and theres no need to worry about swb or anything seeing as there is no diving involved.
One of the main food sources of large wrasse is blennies and small rock fish. They also seem to (like omd said) take sandeel when given the chance, however the speed and nature of s.eels makes me think that it wouldn't be a regular food supply, but rather a treat when a weak or injured one swims by. They are pretty veracious feeders, that take a variety of foods... i have seen some take cuttles, starfish, small pollack, and even taken claws from 6lb+ lobsters! This makes me think that given half the chance, it would have given your lure a good bashing!

cheers for the help, just wondered what other peoples thoughts where on the solo/buddy question.
we get lots of wrasse down here in brighton on plugs and spinners, but they rarely get to 4 pounds, most of them are small.
i was also wondering about lenght of line you used on your guns.

I decided to remind myself what proper fish look like and went to visit the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth today. Nice to go to an aquarium and see some native species for a change (unlike London's aquarium). Pollack and bass like medium sized dogs! Bream, turbot, plaice ooh I'm drooling just rememberingrofl
