Hi all

Went in at Budleigh today even though it looked like the Bristol channel going full tilt and the river was raging with allsorts floating down it!!!
Jumped into the river and rode the wave down at about 8 knots!!!!
It smelt like a cow's backside and looked like chocolate but didn't taste the same.
anyhooo the viz was crap but did improve to a massive 20cm out towards the back of the reef where i managed to at least see some pollack.
Couldn't stay down though as i seem to have a problem with my weight since i've got a new suit, 10kg won't keep me down?? I'm not fat by any stretch of the imagination so God know's what's going on.

anymore weight and i won't make it of the beach and certaily not back against a river going mental and the tide. Any ideas?

End of fishing report and i managed not to clog the site with 40 odd messages about ordered gear and cocking about with online catalogues.

Anyone with an answer to my weight problems please step forward ( not slimmers World) and anyone willing to let me dive with them locally please give me a Message

try some more weight is probably the only answer. if you don't want more weight on your belt get a weight harness so you can distribute the weight, my lower back kills with more than 5kgs on it cant imagine 10kgs ouch. I only need 7 kgs to be neautal at 4 meters lucky me.

Dive with empty lungs hahaha.

Thanks Matt

I just worry that a harness isn't quick release but i suppose i could wear some on the harness and some on the belt? Will that work i'm not sure how low a harness comes down and would it tangle the weight belt?.

Tribs the weight harness is worn with a weight belt. it wont get tangled it fits tightly to the body.
You could have the 10 kgs on your belt then 2 kgs in the harness. Removing it in a emergency involves just slipping your arm through the arm strap and it will fall off.
Also if you ditch just the weight belt and not the harness you flout face up in the water.
Look at dave's site, the seatec weight harness is good.

In terms of diving Budleigh, if it's a strong current you could get away with a 5/3 surf suit and a hood in terms of insulation (I find my 5mm spearo suit too hot when swimming hard for long periods ie Budders), which is less buoyant and therefore needs less weight.

Jez and Matt

Thanks guys for the info. Matt, i did have a look at the Seatec harness last night and might go for that. Jez, i too find that i'm roasting at Budliegh swimming against the flow especially carrying 10 kg. All my bouyancy problems started since i changed from a 5mm shorty with 6kg which was fine to a 5mm full MTM camo suit from Spearo Dave. The new suit is lovely but i float. I used to get cold in the shorty after about two hours so don't quite know what to do, probably swap and change between the two and buy a harness!
What do you guys do, have you got more than one suit for different things? Lots of people seem to have different guns for different venues etc is it the same with suits?

I have two suits but only one fits!. A 5mm suit is perfect for all UK diving, but a under vest is nice for the winter and early in the season. I'm still wearing my under vest i get cold easily.

Use more weight, on your belt or on a harness. Most harnesses are NOT quick release and many do not like them for deep diving. if a harness is not secured to your belt it will also smack you in the head when you up-end for a dive.
When I am diving in cold (5mm jacket and trousers, 5mm gloves, 7mm socks) or shallow water I am carrying over 30lbs on my belt.

When using a good suit it is possible to stay in the water for 5-6 hours.

Looks like the weather is on the turn so with any luck the vis may improve by the weekend. Hope so any way as it seems like ages since i have been in. Not many reports of big catches for the last couple of weeks, so i don't think its only me thats not having much luck.

Got a wetsuit today to borrow until I can get one custom made thru Daves site.

Hopefully I will be in the water with my buddy and his gun before the week is out.

I will be using my normal-volume diving mask and fins for now until I get the bug so hopefully they will be OK.

Ansteys Cove first :-)

Dreaded dentist on friday morning a possible filling and then shooting off to thurlestone for a dive hope you right about the viz Sarge I need to get wet, the way things are going the fish will be gone by the time the water clears

Will be testing my camera on Friday (if all goes well) so should have some underwater pics and maybe some video

if you do get a filling, you'll have to have anaesthetic. make sure you mention to the dentist that you're going spearing. he'll be able to give you info on possible side effects of the anaesthetic (could be more/difficult to raise heart rate immediately after certain anaesthetics).

there is however another 'alternative' anaesthetic :friday

I dived the day after having 4 teeth removed and being anaesthetised i didn't event think about the possible side effects. The most painful part was getting the snorkel caught in the gap!.
The manual of freediving says if a small bubble of air gets trapped in the filling it can cause pain during a dive. Im not trying to scare you hahah.

Hi all

Went in this afternoon at the regular spot at Budleigh and the viz had improved greatly from last few days. Saw a bass the size of a sardine but managed to take a 2lb Mullet for tea. Been out tonight in the boat and had two bass, one over and one under size, both went back. Loads of sole in the bay apparaently now, but maybe just too deep 27ft ish?

PS does anyone know if you can put patches on Elios wetsuits? Just got mine from Spearo Dave but managed to get pounded into the reef today by a rogue swell and seriously banged my knee and took a chip out the suit. Not desparate yet but it might wear through before the rest of the suit as it is a high stress area. Advices please.

Tribs.
