South Devon Report 2008

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
There is an engines section on the Ribnet forum - they might have some opinions on Mercs. For me I own a related engine - the Mariner 50hp - Bloke that serviced it for me reckons they are pretty good and reliable motors...

I’ve got a Tohatsu 40hp 2-stroke and it’s done me proud, if anything it a little to much engine for the boat (4.8 meter Tohatsu inflatable) as if you give it a big hand full the motor tries to spin the boat around. Go fun though.:):):)

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to have a look at a merc 8hp two stroke tomorrow. Thats if I can still get a lieu day !!
Good Hunting over the weekend all :)

Dave

Dude best to check Tohatsu's 4 strokes first, I dont even know if anyone still makes 2 strokes anymore if they do it wont be for long!
Nothing wrong with the mechanics of a simple two stroke but they pollute the atmosphere & are incredibly uneconomical, there are a few fuel injected 2 /Ss but they start at 40hp. On the + side you can get good deals on 2/Ss but you will save the difference in fuel very quickly with a 4/S.

I agree with all of the above and was initially looking for a 4 stroke when I replaced my motor last year until I started checking out the weights. Average weight of 15hp 2 stroke is 40kg compared with 50kg for a 4 stroke. Not a problem if it's staying on a boat and you have no intention of carrying the boat, but makes a huge difference if you are taking it on and off a nice light inflatable.

A recommendation if you can find them is the Tohatsu 2-strokes, light, powerful, reliable, simple mechanics. The Zapcat racer boys love them as they are always flipping and taking a beating. I currently own a 2004 9.8hp......

The Tohatsu 2 strokes are very solid, but no longer available new. If buying used, be very careful of 40 and 50hp motors, they are great engines, but as these are what the zapcats use there are a lot of thrashed to death examples out there.........

Cheers Tribs , will see you tommorrow, what time you guys coming down?

Got in this morning to test out the birthday gear. 5mm cressi gloves and socks from the other half ( much needed) and the latest addition to my ever growing collection of Spearguns... Omer cayman hf 90

what a sweet looking gun. tracking in the water is noticably better than my comanche with the different shaped barrel , loadings a bit tricky as it's open muzzle but that will come with time.

A very light gun, it came with optional weights to place inside the barrel but after trying it out today I wont be putting them in.

Spent an hour shooting the tips off kelp for a bit of target practice. and then a quick look for the shoal of bass I bumped into yesterday but no luck.

Lasted about 2 hours in the water then got out due to been Bloody freezing, that and the fact the girlfriend was treating me to a pub lunch :)

DAVE L how did you get on with your outboard?

Fish eh! What are they like?!

Never thought I would get in on the 15th of November, but Metcheck showed a window in the weather, and the Blackpool Sands and Looe Webcams had shown flat calm for a couple of days. Off I set for my 180 mile trek to a small cove near Start Point.

Really pleased to see that the vis appeared nearly the best it's been all season, and got in 1hour before a super low spring. Air temp 14 degrees, water temp 14 degrees - ridiculous!

Had to swim bloody miles around rocks you normally glide over, but the good vis ( 3-8m ) and calm sea made up for it. Nothing to see at first, but then a dark shape under an overhang - a huge Ballan Wrasse, half asleep. I then proceeded to see more wrasse in one dive than I've ever seen, with many of them looking like 5 lb plus.

Still not tempted by them, they stayed off the spear, and I set off for some good gullies and holes that I hoped would contain other species, as despite the glut of wrasse nothing else was to be seen, not even the humble pollack that usually investigates and accompanies you!

Swimming over some eroded kelp I looked down into a hole and saw a flash of silver. Then another, and another. This small hole, no more that 1m by 2m
contained a large shoal of rapidly circling mullet, some up to 4-5 lb - an amazing sight! There is a phrase about shooting fish in a barrel, but no, I waited to pick one off. Naturally it was medium sized, and naturally I missed!
By the time the reloading proces was completed, they were off.

Heartened and disheartened at the same time I headed towards a long, deep( usually !) and narrow gully. Peering over the kelp at the gully edge I could hardly believe that I was seeing the same, or another, shoal, this time lining up with the incoming tide. Despite picking out a bigger fish to target, I once again missed. Time for a gear review - or a brain review. As I fumbled to reload I could hardly believe that the shoal had remained in place. Desperate not to lose sight of them I carried on reloading in full view, but as the wishbone finally clicked into place, saw the last one disappear out of the gully end!

Getting cold by now, with about 3 hours in the water, I called it a day, and, most probably, a season.

Talk about set you up for next year though. Fish eh! What are they like?!

great post :)

You lasted 3 hours and saw fish why in the world would you want to hang your gear up!!!!!! get out there

Nice one Shiny1. Good to hear you are still catching. Somebody did suggest strapping a GPS to you!
I hope to get in at the weekend weather permitting. I have just ordered a Venom Apnea from Spearo. Hope to try it out before the end of the season.
Tribs, pm'd you.
