Waterbird - I have 3 suits from Spearo - I went off piste a year ago and bought one off the peg from Omer - didn't fit my funny body shape. Made to measure from Elios through Spearo is a good way to go - check out Spearguns by Spearo uk ltd finest supplier of speargun, monofins, speargun and freediving equipment I'm not tough enough to be cold...
I dived Heybrook recently. It's closeby, fairly sheltered, and there seems like a fair few fish about.
Glad I went with my gut feeling and left it alone.
Im surprized the mods havent made a sticky Guide on what you can and cant take, minimum sizes and recommend take sizes saftey, etc...
I think newcomers to the forums and people just starting out would really benifit from it.
PS: when I say what you can and cannot take I mean legaly as I know there are some very strong views on whether too take wrasse or not.
Bovisand reef is quite good, just in front of the chalets, and from there you can swim towards Heybrook Bay. If you look to the other side of the sound, you can see Kingsand, Cawsand and Penlee. Its quite sheltered in Kingsand Bay and good for flatfish. Its deeper towards Penlee with some nice sandy gullies. Polhawn beach next to Rame head is OK. Downderry is full of gullies and kelp. A friend of mine saw a spearo come off the reef there with a Turbot last year.
Those locations should keep you going for a while.
Check the BSA site and ask for your area with regards to minimum sizes etc.
Spearfishing - contents
Legally you can take Wrasse but because most people seem to dislike them then it follows that they won't shoot them for the sake of it. I will shoot them for the pot when the need takes me as they are excellent for making stock and the smaller ones are used in the classic Bouillabaise.
As far as I know, the few spearfishing clubs in UK usually promote taking fish which are bigger than the minimum sizes recommended by local Fisheries Depts. I agree with you that we should perhaps try and organise a table of some sort for beginners with regards to minimum sizes and laws. A question for the moderators? If you are unsure, always ask here because someone will have the answer and it's better to safe than sorry!
Plymouth Breakwater, Kingsands, Looe, Downderry, Seaton, Polperro, Talland Bay - all hold fish but you need to get in and find which bits you like!

Just a note to say that this forum has been great for me over the past two seasons and it was point as a case in point today when I met up with Scott Wilson from the forum. Scott helped me the other week by sending me some gun parts and then we finally got together today and he was willing to share one of his hotspots with me today. Really helped me out. Also people like James T and North1 locally and Foxfish over on the island with his flatfish hunting advice.
Just a big thanks to all really.

Was that off your boat shiny1? Nice bass and good effort on the flounder. How close to shore was the flounder, what sort of ground was it lying on? I keep looking but cant seem to find anymore.

I weighed my flounder last night just before i chucked him on the barbeque. Gutted it weighed a shade under 2lb.
It made great eating on a nice warm May evening.

I found a bag in the shed today ( nothing else to do due to the eastrly) containg my first dive kit.
gul surf suit
c skin hood
beaver goggles
c skin gloves
beaver snorkel
aqualung scuba fins
sommap 40cm gun
the only thing missing was the 2lt coke bottle I used for a float which was changed for a beaver torpedo float that I now use for the crab pot.
When I compare it to what I have now I cant help but laugh but It did help me catch my first mullet which I will never forget
If the fish are in down here they must be in up your way Tribs. I have stopped shooting lots of the 2lb size schoolies at the minute as i wouldn't know what to do with all the fish, haha . I managed to spook a couple of big bass last night with the new mamba, i missed them with 2 point blank bent arm firing from the hip type shots as we came head to head with each other in the string weed :head (still getting the hang of aiming with the bloody thing) lots of f's and c's under water.
Tribs - hows budders warming up - Bass must be in now? I reckon its worth a bash once we get a dry spell and some wind with 'N' in it. What do you reckon?
