I used to use a Go-Pro, but now have a Canon Ixus 85is in an Ikelite housing with a 64gb card. Doesn't shoot HD video, but footage quality is excellent.

I'm having the same dilemmas as you Dave, regarding choosing a camera.

I gather the Go Pro is nice and small and easy to use, and I just worry that some of the cameras mentioned above might be a bit bulky, or full of fiddly buttons.

Someone put me straight, please.

Gaz i have never used a camera before and the one i use is simple to use. A few of my mates have had Go Pro and had trouble with them,leaks ect.
Yes the type i use are bulky but when on my gun its not a problem at all. Its not very easy in stringweed but then nothing easy in stringweed. There is other cameras on the market that are smaller with all the options the bigger cameras have but then your talking big money.

Understood mate. I've heard about the snags with the Go Pro. I'm still in a dilemma though. Guess I'll have to do a bit more research.

I have not tried the other cameras mentioned so can not compare, but i can say that the fuji f200 that i have is very easy to use, while all the buttons are accessible from the outside of the box if you set it to the right mode on land then the only ones you might want and the view button and turning the flash on or off. i have used all the functions on this camera with 5mm kevlar fingered gloves in 5 degree water and still found that i was able to use them quickly and reasonably easily. it is pretty bulky but you can use it with one hand.

The Go-Pro is a nice small camera, but you get no LCD srceen, it eats batteries and the housing lets it down. Mine is forever misting and leaking, so I don't use it anymore. I think the footage quality tends to suffer in poor light conditions too. Though the new HD one is supposed to be better.
A camera and housing is a bit bulkier, but the results are way better. You can always take the camera off your gun and do some proper photography too.

Gaz i was the same as you,didnt know what to go for reading into cameras big time and getting nowhere. My girlfriend knows nothing of spearfishing diving or underwater cameras,she just went out and got one for my birthday. It turned out to be one of the better ones on the market. I would still be looking now else.
When you do get one Gaz i will make a mount up for your RA gun,its simple and easy with no fixings needed. All my other clips on youtube are with the camera mounted to the gun.

Thanks for the offer mate - I might take you up on that.

After reading the thread last night it became clear that most people are now using their ordinary, every day camera, with a waterproof housing. I remembered that I've got a Sony Cybershot tucked away in a draw - it's a few years old, but after a bit of research I've discovered that I can still get a waterproof housing for it. So I might get that ordered up and see how it goes.

Obviously I'll get results posted as soon as I get the chance.

Gaz - My cam is a sony and Ikelite made the case for it. Bulky as you like but the footage is good.

It's a W100 if you are interested. Far superseded now but it works.

Gaz, I have a T33 sony Cybershot & I bought a marine pack for this a while back. I have used it a fair bit on holiday abroad snorkeling & does some decent shots, obviously the vis was good in the caribbean.

Only thing I can say is it can be a bit difficult in trying to capture the target on the camera without a cross hair of some sort, but if it is attached to your gun the end should be a good enough reference.

It hasn't leaked & is still going strong, the buttons are good & easy to operate & you can switch from movie to single shot pretty easily, although I didn't have any gloves on. As it was a marine pack it came with some extra rubber seals & a little tube of silicon. I think it would do you well to invest in a waterproof case.
It states it can go down to 40m, I would like to say that I have tested it to that depth, but I have only managed 18m at Vobster Quay with Bryn, Podge & some others.

Hi All,

Went out today to try my new RIB out. Disaster struck from the off when I discovered that the trailer I had borrowed had rusted and collapsed between collecting the boat from my parents and taking it 5 minutes down the road to my house! Quick nip back to mother's to swap to my longliner trailer and the show was back on the road.

Down to the beach with North1 I went to find some T*** had parked for the day across the beach access. I was just about steaming by then when a pick up truck charged right into where I was reversing!!!!!!!!!!!! As I was about to get out and have some stern words with said driver a very familiar and very french face lent out to say hello. Olivier (Crazywind) was now coming out for the maiden voyage having been offered to up grade from his planned shore dive.

Anywhoooo, the day was blighted with bloom for the boys and relentless sinus problems for me. we did see fish but nothing on the stringers. Still, the boat didn't sink and it beats the S*** out of working, messing about in boats.

More drugs needed and a better doctor me thinks and also a bigger engine! Feel the need for speed!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations to renowned Devon photographer Dan Bolt.
Dan won first prize in the Apeks British section of the British Underwater Image Festival.
Here's what the judges had to say,
. . . 'it was felt that Dan Bolt's extraordinary image of a john dory being cleaned by a spider crab was the standout achievement. His image provides a unique insight into the life of this enigmatic fish.'

I don't know if the picture is on Dan's website, but you can see it in this months Dive magazine, it really is an outstanding photo and shows the kind of behavior I thought you only saw on coral reefs.

Just got back in from a nice evening dive. Shame about the sea fog that rolled in. As it was dusk, I took out my new polespear to give a try, and maybe find some flatties to bash with it. To anyone thinking of trying a polespear, take it from me, its bloody hard, and I'm now on a massive learning curve using old school technology. I knew you had to be close, but not THAT close. Just holding it "cocked" while doing a decent breath hold took me 30 dives to get the hang of it. Still, lots of time to practice, so I might be going hungry for a while. I'm not giving up on the gun, just fancied trying something new. I think it will come into its own when night diving, so another report on it later this week.

Hey All,

Out in the boat tonight and the bloom is still thick in our neck of the woods! Wave on the beach when launching was a horrid orange and it didn't get much better for 200 yards. Out in the middle of the bay was better and actually blue and the mackerel were duly obliging! We did see fish working further out, we guessed at bass pushing the mackerel into the surface layer as the birds were making the most of it. Came home with a good feed and the best parts of a 7lb spider crab! Result.
Grilled claws and legs tomorrow.
