South Devon Report 2010

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
I went for a night dive last night to the usual spot. Got there at 10pm and it was still a bit too light, so I unpacked the gear and looked at the view for a while til it got darker. It was the second time out with the polespear, so I had to adjust the technique of loading it with a torch on the other hand. Not easy.
Normal practice is to dive down, cock the spear, wait, shoot fish, then surface.
At night I found it to go something like this:
Cocking the spear underwater, it makes noise as it slides against the torch handle thats on the opposite hand, so now:-
Cock spear on the surface, dive down, find fish and get CLOSE.
It does however, play havoc with your grip strength after a couple of hours.

After a few missed shots, I finally nailed a Pollock, and boy, did he know about it! It just stopped him dead in the water, and you could hear the "whack" when it hit. The weight of the polespear really walloped him.

After that it was pitch black and time to hunt for flatties. I stabbed the first flounder with the pole. The second was a bit skittish, so I shot at him, and "whack", on the spear. Bloody thing is devestating! After getting two more flounders, I headed in, and seeing two eyes sticking out of the sand went to investigate. First Turbot of the year was on the stringer.

Not a bad result for the second time out with the pole. Its still really hard work, mostly holding the pole cocked and stalking fish. I didn't miss the gun at all, in fact I got three shots off during one breathhold. Not having to reload a spear, pull back rubbers and re-rig line was three things less to worry about at night.

Walking back up the beach at midnight, trying to find my shoes, there was a couple who were having, shall we say, an amourous encounter.
Thanks to Magpie's LED advice, my Princeton Tec now lights up a lot more than it used to, and I think the bloke was a bit upset. He proudly boasted that he was having a much better night than I was, though seeing the face of his female companion, the Turbot on my stringer looked a lot prettier rofl

Hi All,

Great stuff Chris, i've got a pole spear I bought in the states, i'll have to dig it out!!

Two reports really - Went in spearing on the low yesterday, saw very few fish and only one good bass in 3 hours. Came home with a 3lb grey mullet though so the freezer was happy. Came in and got reorganised for a late night trip out in the boat. Took plenty of the much obliging mackerel during the last of the light, twelve at a time almost constantly. Fished until 1:30 without much action until a got a run on the rachet. Picked up the rod and saw line continue to pull steadily off the spool. Leant into something huge which had snaffled my whole pollack live bait. It literally would move off the bottom and proceeded to turn my 16ft boat 360', suddenly after 10 minutes it all went slack and the rig came up with my 3/0 varivas hook bitten through just under the eye! Serious fishy on the loose in Budleigh bay boys!!!!
Great fight though!

I had an offer to go out on a mates new boat today and he dropped me in and went off Skiing and towing inflatables. I had a nice dive and took a rare crab (I don't eat it) as he looked big. I only take and keep fish normally. I dropped in to see Shiny1 on the way home and he weighed it and it was 6lb 4oz. I saw a couple of nice bass today but no chance of a shot.

That spider will get you a place in the hall of fame Mark. Well spotted. Enter it on June fish of the month too if you can photograph it with todays paper.

Zoo for the daughter brought me down to the south coast today. Quick dip in at Meadfoot. 2 Bass on a dive spotted together but small, and later a shoal of mullet.

Despite having my float I can not relax on this stretch of coast! All I can hear is boat props!!

Then put my foot right in it as some fishermen in the harbour were unloading a boat. Wife looked and said to my daughter "look at the fish that the men have caught".... I (too loud) replied, "thats there bait!!".. I was corrected by the fishermen rofl.

Mark that's a huge spider crab. I can put it in the HOF for you but you need to sort out the FOM entry. As already pointed out it just needs a picture with a newspaper. I think it's important to keep up the amazing quality of this years FOM entries so far and your spider would do that no prob's.

Dave.

Went for a shore dive today. Long walk down the cliff but worth the hike. I had a mullet soon as i got in then went 2 hours and almost got out before i seen the first bass of the day. Within moments of that i had my first on the stringer,a nice fish of 9lbs. 5 mins later number 2 was on the stringer, another nice fish of 9lbs 8oz.
Viz wasnt upto much, very hard to see the fish until the sun came out. Ended up with a couple more on the stringer then the long walk back up the cliff. I was 6 hours from when i left the car until i got back.

Sounds like a good day at the office.

Nice knife, by the way.
