Hi All,

In today and was surprised at the real lack of fish. Pollack and wrasse but no silver fish. The bonus was that I saw a picture perfect sea trout! Just lay and stared at it for as long as I could stand and it was amazing to watch. He was only a little chap but he was munching quite happily through the sandeel shoal infront of him!
Made my day it really did.

Hey guys, quick question. im always seeing big dog fish every time i go spearing and i was wondering if they are edible and if they taste good, does anyone have any recipes? i dont want to kill one just to see. i know i can catch them easily in my hands so thats not a problem. cheers.

You probably mean bull huss or greater spotted dogfish, yes they are edible but not many folk kill them.
They take an awful lot to stop them riving around & are a real handful to carry around even with mortal injuries.
Virtually all fish are edible with just a few exceptions like electric rays or monkfish (true monkfish).

i love eaten them but there a bit of a handful and just done stop moving also annoying to prepare but all worth while

I’m with Dan, take just a couple and stock the freezer with Dogfish scampi, tis the best you’ll ever taste.
Oh and nice one with the FOM Dan.

Cheers guys, ill pick one or two up next time im on my way back in with no fish ahah. is there a minimum landing size on bull huss and spotted dogfish? i had a bit of a look online but couldnt find any information regarding this. cheers.

They're good to eat mate, but a balls ache to skin - get the biggest one you can to make it worth your while.

They benefit from a period kept in the freezer, prior to preparation, as this helps to rid the ammonia contained in the skin (they urinate through their skin, apparently!)
