Hey Guys, heading down to stay with some mates near Salcombe in a couple of weeks and hoping to get a couple of dives in. Won't have a boat, though and staying on the East Portlemouth side... Does anyone have any suggestions for easy places to park and get in for a dive?

The one that got away...
As I often do I stopped today to check a hole that gave me a 6lb lobster a couple of years ago. Until now no luck but today the biggest lobster I've ever seen was sitting in the entrance.
I went to grab the back of its body as it attempted to back into the hole and see me off with its claws. I managed one hand on the carapace which was quite hard to hold as it was so wide while the other hand ended up holding the slicing claw which had just made a lunge for me. As I began to pick it up the crushing claw got a grip on my ring finger :blackeye (no lasting harm but I can still feel where it got me several hours later).
I managed to use my other hand to pull the claw open and get my finger out and ended up holding both claws closed, one in each hand. I paused for a moment to consider my next move and then all of a sudden I was holding two claws but the rest of the lobster wasn't there :head
I spent the next half hour trying to reach the back of the hole which now had zero viz in it and checking out neighbouring holes but all to no avail :head :head :head :head
If anyone finds a big lobster with no claws or small regrown claws then you'll know why :crutch
The claws weighed in at 3lb 1oz

That sounds like some lobby, I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for it!!!!!!!!!.
We still haven't managed to get our dive in yet have we??!!!? I'm busy over the next couple of weeks but will call you soon to arrange another date!
I'm still haunted by the experience and wishing I had just swum to shore with my finger in the claw and one hand on the body. In hindsight I think it would have been worth the pain but at the time I just wanted my finger out the crusher.
On the plus side it was dead easy cooking the claws and there was enough lobster meat to do lunch for five us

Isn't that what Bill McIntyre catches off the Pacific coast of the USA - Cali-forn-IA? It's about time a few of those Cape Cod striped bass drifted our way on the Gulf Stream.
We'll be heading down to South Devon soon - some miles in land from Dartmouth. Hope to see some of you around.
By the way, can anyone recommend a restaurant(s) in the area (Brixton, Paignton, Dartmounth, Torcross, Habertonford, Halwell, Stoke Flemming, etc.) ? Last time we stayed at this particular location it was marred by an overbusy pub restaurant - the only blot on an otherwise wonderful vacation. (Although on our last trip to South Hams, we found that the small, quaint but otherwise unpromising looking pub two doors down had a top notch chef - and wi-fi - and beer. Impressive.).

The Cricket Inn at Beesands is good.
At Dartmouth there is the New Angel and Mitch Tonks new restaurant the Sea Horse.
