South Devon Report 2010

On the subject of aquariums we went to one near Aberdeen in the summer time and there were some huge pollock. I'd guess 20lb or so. The biggest fish in the tank is a cod, which must be 30lb plus. The guy working there said it has been there since the aquarium opened and must be over thirty years old. Worth seeing.... The tank has no top on it so if one lived there a night dive would be tempting!

We have a locally caught Moray eel in our public aquarium!
I have not been there for about five years but the eel was about 3' long last time I saw it.
I seem to remember the eel was caught in a crab pot about 10 years ago.

Dived in Torbay today 2 hours before HW and 2 hours after. Vis was very variable between 1m and 5m. Quite quiet on the fish front. A fair few bass of around 30-35cm but none bigger seen and the only lobster found was a bit on the small side. Only saw 2 mullet which was surprising as I checked out all their usual haunts.

Had a greenhorn moment when I shot a mullet and reached for my buoy only to find that it was nowhere to be seen :head
Backtracked and found it about half a mile away rofl

Final haul: Some pictures of reef life, 2 pounds of mullet, 3 pounds of mussels and 8 pounds of anchor.

Is that a Devon coral cup in the second pic?

It is indeed. I keep trying to get the perfect picture of one. Still trying!

Great pictures Matt. you could always run the coral cup thru Photoshop to lighten and enhance it a bit but it looks good to me.

I bet that was you I saw with an orange smb between the two beaches at 11.30 this morning. I was down on the other beach brushing up on some scuba skills. The vis was ok at 4m and plenty of bait around, prawns, pipefish, crabs. Diddnt see any pollack though. Looks promising for the weekend if the wind stays the same

That would have been me. Nice new SMB that nearly got left behind!

I saw a lot of 30cm pollack but nothing bigger.

whent in on sunday with tribs the viz was terible but did finish the day with a good mix bag of fish including a mullet beauty tiping the scale at 6lb7oz i hope for better viz for this weekend post the pic of the beast later

Nice haul,

Anchors a bit thin though, the fillets might be a little bare!!

Brave the strong wind and the bad viz with north today we did find few fish but the bad viz and the big! waves did make fishing difficult but we got lucky manage to find a 5 lb mullet, when this wind and bad viz will stop

Hi All,

Out charter fishing today. 8 hours with 10 anglers fishing = result... 1 ling, 1 2lb pollack and a box of pout. No bass, no bream and no cod. 8 wrecks fished 60 miles covered.. rubbish. It didn't cheer us up when the potter came alongside and told us the local netter had taken £5000 of bass off one inshore wreck overnight and that his rival in the docks had 'only' had £2500 worth of bass on another wreck. Thats probably 1000 fish or more gone inside 24hrs and, you guessed it, they had reset on the wrecks with their spare nets as not to "miss out" on the rich pickings.

Sport slow? I wonder not anymore.

hi,

anyone fancy spearing in around torquay/south devon tomorrow or over the next few weeks and able to share a few tips with a novice?

I came down to see my brother yesterday and we went out on his boat today - at last i got some decent viz. i live in north devon and can't see the end of my spear most the time i'm in the water. now i've come down here and seen how clear it is i'll be down here all the time!

it'd be great to pop my spearo fish catching cherry!
