Got in yesterday for a dive. Fantastic weather for September. This time last year i had a few triggers at a spot do. Yesterday i thought i would give it a go. The vis was good but only just enough to see the dark shape of the reef 9m below from the surface. Its also a good spot to find plaice. It wasnt long before the first trigger of the season was in the cooler box. The next trigger i seen went into a hole so i went back to the float and swapped guns. Using the camera gun now i dived down looked in the small hole lined him up the bang, bit hard trying to pull him back out, then out popped 2. Just above the hole a nice size brown crab sat so triggers to the cooler then back down for the Crab. Another trip to the boat with the crab. The boat was right in the middle of the small reef so it was no bother. Normaly i would string them on the float. After another few dives done a came across a nice red mullet,i only had my 70 gun,its mainly for flatties and triggers with a heavy 7mm spear and not what i like to use for the delicate red mullet. Anyway it was circling me in range so bang, the spear went clear through to the mono.I thought he's mine but true to the hard fighting soft flesh red mullet he ripped off. I followed him until i ran out of air. I seen where he went. He was still there on my next dive down, lined him up again and bang. Another hit but this time the spear hit a rock behind and didnt go all the way through. He was stunned and for a moment he was in my hands but not for long. I surface again with a rough idea where he went but several dives later i had to give up. I hate it when that happens. I couldnt stop thinking about which made diving hard because i wasnt relaxed. I did come across another trigger in my search for the red mullet just outside a hole where i shot the first one of the day. So it was back to the cooler box again. I took my torch with me this time, with the thought of looking in the hole where the last trigger i shot was hanging around outside. It was a bit silty down there but the torch picked out another way back in the hole so it was another trip to the cooler for number 5 trigger. I was back to using my 75 gun now with a normal 6.5mm spear on. I was doing the last rocky outcrops of the reef. It was more than 50m from where i lost the red mullet. I was checking the sand around the edge of the reef after checking the reef its self for triggers when i noticed the Red Mullet way out on the sand. He was sat there motionless but aware i was there and ready to bolt again. This time a well aimed shot to the head and another swim to the boat. Just before i shot the red mullet i seen a nice lobster sat half out of his hole so i went back for him before calling it a day. I did notice a couple watching me from the cliffs overlooking the place i was diving. They must of wondered what i was doing keep swimming back to the boat.
