Let me be the first to make this thread in 2013 :)
I know there's not much spearfishing happening around the Swansea/Gower scene, but this year I'm personally making my mission to make that happen.

I hope you all have a successful year and I hope to see some of you make the trip down to us here and 'test the water'.... so to speak.

Jaymz

Happy New Year all South Wales spearos and best wishes for a great year ahead spearfishing.
Until 2 years ago I lived in Swansea for a couple of years and the valleys for 5 years before that. I could kick myself now as I hadn't come across spearfishing until after I'd left the area - would love to try out around the Gower especially. Around Worm's Head has got to worth a dive??!!
I will make it over for a dive when we no doubt return for a family holiday, but doesn't look like that will be anytime soon (doing North Wales in the summer).
Will follow the thread keenly and look forward to reading trip reports from you.

jaymz - good luck in your efforts to get things going, fair play.

All the best.

Hi Dai

Thanks for taking an interest in the thread. Worms head will be great, tonsssss of seals tho. Will they be a problem you think?

What valley did you live in?

If they take an interest in where you are and approach then yes, they'd spook any fish around you. Have only come across one seal so far and luckily got a mullet on the stringer before he came and said hello!!

I've lived in Aberdare up in Cynon and Ystrad Mynach just outside of Caerphilly.

Maybe Mumbles pier worth a shout?

I know Aberdare well im from Glynneath. Learned to swim in Aberdare pool, although i serve a life ban from backflipping off the dive board when i was about 10 haha. im sure theyd let it go now :p

definatley mumbles pier worth a look.

The Neath Valley - Brecon national park to the north and the sea to the south. Nice.

Im thinking about going in the morning. First time trying it with a rubber weight belt, first time ive ever put it on today and its SOOOOOO much better. I orderd it about 3 months ago. I might have to brave it tommorrow.

Went out today down Caswell bay, done a good sweep of the coast and the vis was terrible. Felt lovely and warm apart from my face. Having a tough time with my mask tho so I'm going to get a new 1, any recommendations??

Regarding the mask, if you raise the question in the Spearfishing Equipment section of the forum I reckon you'll get good recommendations. There may be a historic thread that could help. I've only had the one which is ok, but know there are better out there.

Hope your next trip has better vis!!

Just a quickie of the people NOT from Wales. Does anyone makes trips down here throughout the summer?

I know quite a few people who travel to N. Wales from the Manchester area, including me.

I use a micromask which i quite like, I've tried the Omer Zero and like quite a few people I don't like it.

Hi Jaymz,

I was hoping to have been in touch by now stating that I'd be in Swansea this summer on a family holiday with the intention of meeting up for a dive or 2. In fact we're hoping to be able to come to Swansea every year at least once for breaks as there is a family home on my wifes side which would be ideal - but family politics are delaying actual arrangements being made. Kind of out of our hands at the mo but in essence and in answer to your question, I should be a frequent visitor soon enough and would be keen to meet up for spearfishing. Will be in touch if things work out!!

That's excellent Dai. Just keep in touch and let me know and ill be sure to sort something out so we can get out.

It's on my to-do list. Have some concerns about visibility and the large tidal range but I was struck by the potential of the coast around the Mumbles (e.g. Bracelet Bay) last time I visited. It is worth being aware of the tides - I used to climb on Gower and considered tide time tables essential equipment. Access points to some beaches disappear on high tide (e.g. 3-Cliffs Bay/Great Tor, Caswell)

I would avoid the pier if you risk conflict with anglers/SCUBA divers (as would be the case at Swanage in Dorset). There is plenty of sea around, no need to crowd out folk who have more limited access.

BTW Seals have been known to take fish off of stringer. I had a very big, playful one follow me around in S. Devon 2 years ago, couldn't shake it. It nibbled the end of my fins at one point. Another time I landed on top of it while dropping into a gulley on aspetto. I came in after 30 minutes (I'd already dived all around Burgh Island - this was just a short additional dive) - it was a memorable experience but hopeless for fishing :D.

I've done bracelet bay twice last year, few crabs and a seal in the water. Bloke fishing 100m up caught a 5lb bass as I was in there, jammy sod.

I'm really got hit the Gower hard this year, looking at some aerial shots of Gower shows some nice little coves and good viz so I'm going for an exploration down there soon to see where the best access is.

Anyone fancy this lads? Ill be game if someone else decides to go, as we need to be a pair.

Looks like I'm all set for a family holiday in Swansea in August...hooray:D

Will bring my gear so would be keen to meet up for a dive or two, however many the wife will let me get away with (which will be one or two)!!

Hi lads, I'm from caerphilly but have a caravan on the gower so I'm down there most weekends. Never been spearfishing before and fancy giving it a go this summer. I know the area around port eynon/horton well and fish off the kayak. I've got some gear because I surf and do a bit of snorkeling as well, was just wondering if your going if I could tag along and see what its about?

Cheers ash :)
