Hi everybody,

I'm a sea lover from the other side of the world (Portugal) and a responsible (at least I think I am!) spearfisher. I will be in holidays in Cairns from 3rd to 8th of May, Sydney from 8th to 11th and Melbourne 11th to 14th May. I would love to try, at least once, to spearfish there with someone. I have some experience but never caught a "trophy". How knows if it will be there? :)

Francisco

G'day Francisco,

You'll love Australia - May's a nice time of year too - hopefully a bit drier and not too hot.
Cairns will have great spearfishing, Sydney also has great spearfishing and some opportunities for shore-based diving, and Melbourne has, well, Melbourne has great coffee :D In all seriousness I believe that there are some great spots not far Melbourne but the water will be a lot cooler than the north.

When you're in Cairns get in touch with either of these shops - Spear and Dive Cairns (SPEARANDDIVE.COM.AU - Australia Leading Spear Fishing and Free Diving Equipment Specialist) or Divers World Cairns (HOME - Spearfishing Cairns, Australia - Divers World), they will be able to get you sorted with some quality spearfishing.

Have a great trip!

Cheers,
Ben

Hi Francisco

Aren't you the Francisco who did the course with me in Kalymnos?

Either way, I would be happy to take you out spearfishing when you are in Sydney, weather permitting. I don't have a boat, but as Benny says Sydney has lots of good shore diving.

I'll PM you my email.

cheers

guy

G'day Francisco,

*Laughs* unfortunately that's probably pretty true, you'll need that hot coffee on standby after a few hours in the water if your here in May :D I wouldn't let that stop you getting in the water if your keen and the weather's half decent while your here though. I don't do any spearing myself but I'd look these guys up for further info about melbourne- The Southern Freedivers Forum • Index page

Tchesko!!

So it's Oz this year! Nice! - And Yes, yugyug, I do believe you guys know each other. :)

Benny, Jacblue, Tchesko comes with my highest recommendations, we met in Greece and he came to visit here some time ago.

Have a wonderful time all of you and please just make sure that Tchesko equalises his mask, will you? B-)

Hi Richard :)

yes, what a coincidence... well, I don't bealive in coincidences but in consequences.

Thank you very much for your words, I'm really moved!

Guy already offer his help, which was wonderful.
I still have some time to May, so let's hope I can find someone in Cairns.
Now, I'm thinking about Melbourne because like BennyB and Jacblue said, it will be cold :( but if I have a good chance, I will go :)

Richard, bealive or not, I was going to write an email today to you because.... it's Sarah birthday! Give her a kiss from the portuguese Francisco.

Hey Richard, Wow small world isn't it :D
Tchesko getting in towards, winter, Cairns is going to be a nicer place to swim. There's lots to see down here but unfortunately there's a bit of a water temp drop in may/june in Melbourne. If you want an idea check here: http://www.baywx.com/WWW/temps.2011.png (You'll need a wetsuit if you want to stay in for any length of time :) ) Worst case senario, you could always go surfing off the south coast or do something out of the water if you're around here though. If I can help with any info let me know, for spearing the southern freedivers site is probably your best bet though :)

not sure about that... apparently in may inshore Cairns is 2m vis and full of crocs (not mention jellyfish)....!

hopefully he can hook up with some spearos to take him out to the offshore reefs though.

Oh yeah I was thinking he'd go off shore, probably shouldn't have assumed that. You're right, May's still in the jellyfish season. When I was last in Cairns during May the weather was nice and the Viz was ok on the reefs but yep, inshore it might not be so great I'm not sure, will leave that up to people who know the area better than me :)

Hey mate , I'm in Melbourne, originally from Ireland, look me up when you're down this way. It will be cold but diveable. Fish life will have died down by then so try get a dive in up on the east coast if you can.

If you need any gear just let me know and I'll arrange it.

Hi Fitzy,

thank you very much for your email. Like your advise, I will try to dive up in the north but if everything goes wrong and the weather there is good, I will try to contact you.

Once again, thank you very much
