Hello !
I`m looking for some help . Its my second holiday in Malta . Last year I had no significant catch . So if you guys can give me some tips like how and what I can catch on this time of the year will be highly appreciated !

There are fish there - Mike Ladle caught a bass there with a lure from shore but the locals had never seen one before! Malta is reputed to be heavily populated, perhaps it is "fished out" :( .

I live in Malta and spearfish here throughout the year.

Mr. X: whatever local said they've never seen a sea bass must live under a rock, they're pretty popular between January to around now while the water is cold, choppy.

Though yes, Malta is heavily overfished by fisherman, with nets all year around so close to shore etc.

naturalsynthetic: what is it that you actually need help with?
What depths are you diving?

Shallow water diving you'll most likely be seeing a few species of seabream, cuttlefish, octopus. Barracuda could also be found. If you dive deeper, you could get a Dusky Grouper, Brown Meagre etc. Make sure Dusky Grouper are above the legal size (45cm/2.5kg).

Now that the water is getting warmer you can also expect a few Blue Runners A.K.A Mediterannean Trevally, and also Amberjack start too.

Depends on depths, and mostly luck. As I mentioned, Malta is HEAVILY overfished so dont expect too much.

Hi lawstraljan 16,
I'mAustralian, but im currently in italy. Im hoping to do some freediving and spearfishing here but I am also considering going to Malta for a few days to visit a friend and would love to do some spearing and freediving in Malta too.
I am comfortable diving 15 - 20+ meters and have most of my gear with me, apart from my gun and float.
My float was destroyed in Thailand last month and I couldn't bring my guns with me this trip because I'm going home through Hong Kong.
So if I got to Malta from Italy do you know if it would be possible to meet people to go spearing/freediving with?
Also would it be possible to rent or borrow a gun and float?
or....
If I bought a gun in italy, would I have any problems entering Malta with it?
Feel free to email me at camskea@hotmail.com or reply to this thread
thanks in advance
Cameron

Hey. I know a guy that teaches apnea courses but obviously for a fee. Im almost certain no one rents guns here, and you shouldnt have any problems entering Malta from Italy with a speargun just make sure to declare it. If you want contact me on my email lawstraljan16@live.com and Ill be happy to help out with an extra gun of mine.

Do i need a license for spearfishing? I dont want to have to much gear with me so can someone give me an advice regarding size of the gun i should bring? Wooden 110 achilles or something smaller like seatec miniroller 75? Also can is there a scuba store i can get cheap 12 kg lead weights for belt.
