A small brief I hope it will help the new spearos who need more info. regarding spearfishing in QATAR...
1- speargun:
80-100 cm euro style guns with one or two rubber bands (18-20mm, power boost or mean green) , float or reel is preferred in case of a large or strong fighter fish like Cuda, King mackerel, Trevally or Milkfish.
if your into spearfishing reefs and rocks or shallow water I think a Pneumatic (air gun) 50-80cm gun will help you more and will cut the loading time, and much easier to maneuver in caves or between rocks.
if your more into long shots and blue water ... stay with the Euro rubber guns.... much much more accuracy, speed and power.
larger wood spearguns like American, hawaiian or australian guns are not preferred here, because its really rare to find or shoot a very large fish that need this type of guns here!
2- the prey:
- GROUPER: the main targeted fish here GROUPER locally known as (Hamur) ... you can find it all around the year in caves and between rocks and if your lucky enough some times you can find it out on the sand just watching you!!!:inlove (mostly at dawn and sunset), bigger ones can bend your shaft!!
- Seabream and Emperor: locally known as (Faskr, Shaeiri) very common fish here and one of the first fishes that you will shoot probably!! they like to hide between reefs, very easy to shoot them. when they are out the escape very fast! you can find them all around the year.
- Trevally: locally known as (Jash) one of the favorites for the spearos here... nice fish to shoot best time for it here from DEC-APR, a strong fighter too specially the large ones .... very strong, better to use a reel or float.
- King mackerel: locally known as (Chana'ad) the spearos dream here specially the big ones, its like yellow tuna to others!! best time for it here from DEC-APR, its a very strong fish that will fight you to the last second.. don't think in shooting the big ones (15-60kg) without a float or reel...
