Hey guys , first time poster. I am considering doing a trip down the Mexico into Baja California and beyond during January . I have over a month to spend and I would be traveling down from LA. I was wondering if anybody could offer any advice on spearing down south or if I could be put in touch with some known locals on the forum.
Regards

Matt

Hi Matt,
I live in San Carlos on the Sea of Cortez. I'm 5 minutes away from the ocean and was in the water as often as 5X weekly as recent as early November. By mid-November we had a lot of stinging algae in the water and conditions have only worsened since.

I dove last week, and though the stinging algae was gone the visibility has been 3 ft at best. It looks like dilute pea soup. What's worse is that the only fish I saw were puffer fish and a few stingrays. In November the reefs were full of Sergeant Majors, Cortez Rainbow Wrasses, King Angel and Cortez Angelfish, Triggers and a few other varieties. I'm seeing none of this now. Water here is about 62˚.

I spoke with a fisherman over New Year's who's been fishing these waters for over 23 years and he said he's never seen it this bad. He has been bringing food to a local fisherman I bought Yellowtail from as recent as June. He hasn't caught a thing in weeks.

I can't speak to the conditions on the Baja side of the Sea of Cortez... but on the Mexico side things are about as bad as possible. I'm hoping someone posts with info on the Baja side conditions as I'm trying to get info on that myself.

Lawrence
