Spearing north wales

Hey Guys,
Just got back from Norway, was out there line fishing for a week! got some monster cod, had 2 of 33lb and another of 22lb and my mate had a monty one of 37lb!! it was quite literally Baltic out there!! would have been lovely for a dive...... but was about 4deg c !!! Also had loads of wolffish, halibut and jumbo hadock up to 8lb!! prob caught 100 plus cod between 2 and 10lb as well.

So its time I got in and did some spearing! what is the viz like at the mo? is it still shitty green water?

I've seen a video of spearishing in Norway, exactly in Lofots. Good stuff and loads of fish there! These guys go there in August when the temperature isn't that bad. What depth did you catch these cods, something spearo feasible?

The water was about 3m last weekend in Rhosneigr so fishable but should be pretty brown at the mo cos of the south west wind, at least there!

Viz is about 3mm today rofl It wont clear for at least a week no matter where you go in North Wales. All that crap will have come in from the rain too and be washed around back and fourth by the tide.

Good to see you back TD! What do you do with 66lbs of Cod rofl Must have had fish fingers coming out of your ears mate!

All the good fish went back, we kept a few red fish, haddock and smaller cod to 10lb. (they taste the best anyway!)
As for depth, they are found on mud/shale bottom bettween 40m and 120m!! so in that temp a bit out of range!!
They have smaller fish up shallow and we caught cod up to 16lb from a mark in 25m of water.

This has to be a worse season than last year.....weather/wind/swell/bloom.... atrocious.

Distinct lack of decent fish also, at all depths and states of tide.

Seriously getting back into windsurfing as at the moment.....getting a little disillusioned with the old spearo.

Personally i had a few good weeks early on in the season so for me its turned out better than last year already! I do hope it gets better over the next month - school holidays for me in two and a half weeks!!wehey

ps .. have also signed the petition and lettered my MP - recieved a letter from the house of commons signed by my MP saying that he would look into the matter and telling me to letter DEFRA with my concerns - which i already had done .

Only been in a handful of times, but blanked twice out of 8....unheard of down west. Vis ok late may, but June a complete wash out. Wind then bloom.
Distinct lack of school bass also compared to previous years, spiders also looking smaller.
Had a few bigger fish (5-7lb) ....all at 9-10mts. All loners, nothing shallow, though don't really do shallow.
I think Pembs suffers from Milford estuary stirring up vis.

Long range forecast for July looks the same.....'unsettled'....that's met office blurb for s***e

Hi guys
yest I went in in the evening and found 2-3m of viz. Loads of bass around 1-2 pounds, school of 10-20 fish all the time around me. Caught 3 and 1 mullet and left the others to grow up!I couldn't fish long though because the current was very very strong although it was around the high tide and for that I couldn't reach the best spot for bigger bass. Nice to be mantioned 2 dolphins swam around me, maybe they were interested in my fish!

Went in tonight just as the tide was turning in .. went for a walk first and the water looked saturated but slightly fishable , so i gave it a go - vis was bad close in , not even a meter , further out however it was very fishable with vis up to 3m , but it was patchy and very difficult to focus . Saw a couple of doggies , nothing else. Might try again tommorow.

HEDS, good to hear you can fish again! I'll be in North Wales for the weekend, I don't know where yet. Probably Leyn Peninsula, the water may be cleaner!Good luck for tomorrow!

In the end I didn't manage to get in, maybe mid week might offer a chance if work allows.

Fantastic pic. Male cuckoo wrasse in full breeding colours. Mainly a deeper water fish, at least in spearo terms. See quite a few when I'm on scuba but usually below 60ft and commoner around the 100 ft mark. Can be very territorial when breeding and will fearlessly challenge you if they think you're in their patch.
