Hey Mowgli,

I remember some Italian contractors about a decade ago telling my dad about the spear diving in ruwais. They were building a power station or desalination plant, and were shooting some huge hamour.

Is the area no-go because there are some oil/power/desalination installations there? Do you need a boat?

If you have a boat that you don't mind having confiscated, Dhs.25,000 that you wouldn't mind parting with and 6 months of spare time you wouldn't mind spending in jails, plus of course if you're not really bothered by the Coast Guards, the Army or the Enviromental Authority depriving you of all your gear.. drop me a line and we'll go to Ruwais (350kms from Dubai) for a once in a life time spearfishing trip..

i pm'd you.

We were once caught and interrogated by the coast guard on the East Coast for diving 3km away of a US ship. It turns out , the US Navy got involved and it was a very long day.

You're lucky you're using the past tense then..

hey guys, I'm coming to Dubai on Tuesday hoping to get some spearo done. But I hear there is a really bad sandstorm at the moment...does that mean diving is off? If not is anyone up for a dive - I'm in the Jumeirah area? Maybe I should bring my surfboard too? Had some brilliant waves last time...roll on Tuesday!!

I did a boat dive last time and whilst I was diving the captain hooked a cobia, which was too big for the line it was caught on and we couldn't land it, so I dived down and speared it. Best fish I ever tasted. Also had some nice trevally and 'cuda off the rocks near Sunset Beach...can't wait to get back! :)

Hopefully meet some of you out there!

It's the beach just to the north of the Burj - it's probably not it's real name, just what I've been told the surfers there call it - I don't know my way around so well. Would love to join your trip if you don't mind? I'll PM you when I arrive! :)

man i wish i had leaneant parents :p i woul dlove to join you guys but, mum wont let me and school :(, this sunset beach sounds intruging, might try down there this friday or soemthing, providing the weather holds off :(

Milkman, youa re welcome
thanks Jonny maybe next time

I have never been up near Dibba, Fished out of Fuj. a few times. You guys shore diving or got a boat lined up? I was thinking of moving my boat to that coast. I know the fishing and diving is better, but if I can just shore dive for monsters no need to move the boat.

Hi there spearo's. I have been working in Abu Dhabi for about 12 months (from South Africa). Really keen to get back into spearfishing again. Saw lots of scary stories about the confusing laws etc. Anyone care to give me a bottom line in terms of spearfishing in Abu Dhabi or the UAE/Oman in general? I report to a Minister and would not want to find out about restrictions the hard way. As I understand it spearing is OK if 2 miles offshore (and not in reserves or near riggs) and not with Scuba gear? Keen to join on some boat dives and get a few for the pot. Been spearing for 30+ years.

Sorry Boet,

I wanted to start spearfishing here in the UAE as well.

But the legislation in this place is for the birds as you are not allowed to legally spear fish here.

So if you want to you have to go and poach a bit and hope no one see you.

That's why I am fishing now.

That's precisely the reason.. yes.. and you do need a boat to get there.. It's not far though.. Just 10kms in ie around an hour in a 26ft boat with a 75 bhp engine for the riggs.. and just 30 minutes to get to the corals..

Mowgli, Mowgli... tell us more about this place.

Sorry Billo.. I just saw your message..

Ruwais is the best spearfishing spot in the UAE, without the scent, let alone a complete shadow of a doubt..

Visibility can exceed 15 meters.. It is a colourful area in which you will find every possible sea bed type.. from the bulky rocks holding massive groupers of +30kilos, +50kilo Cobias etc.. to the Oil rigs of 25kilo jacks & +40K Kingfish..

Sharks are rare and when they do appear, are usually quite docile.. closer to dolphins really..

Dolphins are plentiful and extremely playful as well.. Sorry enough, most of the diving I did in Ruwais was before the days of my under water video cam.. Oh no.. I lied.. i just remembered.. I do have a quite a few video and still pics of Spearfishing in Ruwais.. As soon as I get my hands on a video editing software, I promise to put up a 10 minute video clip, just of Ruwais.. but if I get locked up for this, everyone who's seen the video clip, had better be there to bail my a$$ out of the locker.. :D

I have been caught spearfishing by the Coast guards, the Environment Authority, the UAE Army and the sharks of Ruwais.. but I just can't help myself..

Ruwais is 350kms away from Dubai and I usually go there fo 2 days trips.. but again usually end up coming back the very first day.. I need to get me a bigger ice box..

Ps: One day's catch in Ruwais, left me no choice but to buy a stand alone deep freezer.. The fish are quite big..

Sounds fantastic spearfishing. I am still keen to go spearing in the UAE notwithstanding the uncertainties about the laws and horror stories. However, I am looking to join an experienced dive buddy. Anyone willing to show me the ropes? I am also in the process of buying a boat...
