A dream i frequently experince. I am sitting on the edge of a boat and here comes the dolphins. Something draws me to them. Their smile? Their joy over their freedom? Absence of boundaries without any type of segregation. I place my hand in the water and one of the dolphins effortlessly pulls me into the water. Blue prettier than any blue I have ever seen. It takes me straight to the bottom. I think I need to breath. BUt I don't want to let go. the deeper it takes me the more i feel the squeeze of the ocean around my body. I let go and start to surface up. i think i may need to breath but there is no urge to do so. just before i reach the surface the dolphin appears out of no where and takes my hand with its snout and guides me to the depts again. This time around i feel like i have a choice of letting go but i don't..............
Cultural, traditional and organized taboos have poluted all of our brains and hearts. How is it possible for all to be wishing for peace yet when push comes to shove we end up saying mine is better than yours................. wars and fights break out. Free diving to me is all about freedom, nature and the creator of all whatever it may be...............

dreaming

On the subject of dreaming.

Do you ever dream about freediving ?
In all my years that I have been freediving,
I have not had 1 dream about freediving, or drowning for that matter.

Some people say that you dream about things that is not sorted out in your life, and other say that you dream about things that fills your mind,
may it be good or bad.

I say that different people dream different ways.
Some in colour, some in black and white.

care to share your view ?

I had a dream about freediving last night. (my first)

It was kinda sureal. Me and a friend + some other divers, and Kirk Krak!? was on a boat. Kirk pointed at the water and said "it's about 30 metres deep see if you can do it"

I jumped in and swam right down, and when I got up I remeber it felt like it was the easiest thing.:D The strange thing is that I have never seen a picture of Kirk Krak I have only read about him, and still I just knew it was him

was this teh man in your dream ?

Dreaming to start with, I have had several diving dreams, but I usually grow myself gills... so no need to hold my breath.. it is quite cool except before I realize that I can breath underwater..

Then About spirituality..

I feel so free underwater that it is apsolutely spiritual experience! It is like going to church and feeling purified.. I find it very addictive.. Then again I also like to push myself to the limits and that I s quite easy for me when diving.... I like that..
Perhaps there is connection with God as the peace underwater allows me to listen to myself so much better!
And well I know that even to my deepest dives lord is with me..

My feelings about diving..

I have actually had dreams about freediving and awakened to find that I'm not breathing -- a rather odd form of sleep apnea (i.e. not obstructive sleep apnea, but "voluntary" sleep apnea that was part of my dream). Time to get up Jaques.

As far as spirituality, I find that freediving is a nice metaphor for many aspects of real life-- getting frantic about your goal (staying down there) just takes you farther away from it. Beyond that, I can't really articulate what it is about freediving that makes it what it is. It seems to be the Tao of sports -- "To say one knows the way of the Tao is to not know the way of the Tao."

That has happened to me as well. Especially after training sessions, I awake early morning hours with apnea. When that happens I immediately reach for my watch and allow my self to maintain that meditative state and attempt static apneas. I have done my best breath hold times in this fasion.
Through meditation i am trying to reach that state at will versus waking up to it. It has helped my dives tremendously.

DREAMS

My freediving dreams have never had Kirk in them, Mandy, Meghan, Karoline and Tanya maybe, but never Kirk.;)

I also just read a study about the effects of meditation on people's brains. One part of the study was specifically done on Buddahists who meditate. It found changes in their brains, as seen through a CAT scan, that seemed to indicate that they were much happier and more relaxed people in general.

Since freediving is almost just one big meditative exercise, I wonder if it might not have a bit of spirituality imbedded into it.

This might also explain why people on THIS list are so much more laid-back and friendly than those on the tec-diver lists.:t

Are you implying something? :D I just realise that I don't know any gay people that freedive. I'm not gay by the way.

Well Kirk was coaching, I didn't get to tell the rest of the dream (wich was wierder) Later Kirk was chumming for fish, and a little shark + 5 or 6 other fish came and I wanted to catch one, but as I tried to jump my suit got caught in a door to a bar!?, and the bar keeper made me pay for it. Then I woke up it was 5:45 and time for my morning run.

Later today I had the greatest dive and caught a special flatie with my hands, and it tasted superb.

No dreams about free-diving yet Herman..have'nt been in the sport long enough !!

On the Spirituality thing, the poem I wrote was from how I percieve free-diving, as opposed from my experience, I hope that one day I will look at my poem, and understand HOW it feels, that experience of the deep blue water !

For now, my month old quota in freediving is one of almost transporting myself to another place and another time.
I have been a passionate climber and paraglider pilot for a while, but even the best experiences there do not 'take me away'.
When I free-dive, I feel myself relax, but get more alert at the same time as I prepare to dive, and once down, it's almost as if I have transported myself to another, ancient world. It's a jurrasic place, untouched and unspoiled by humans, and the stunning silence just adds to the experience.

I honestly hope that the joy that I'm getting from every dive as a 'month-old' freediver stays for good.

;)

Did I get lost here and where did that come from? I could care less about someones sexual oreintation when it comes to freediving and spearfishing.

As far as dreams go, I can remember a recent one where I did a dive to about 80 feet. I had a really hard time kicking off the bottom and by about forty feet I could not ascend any further. I remember using my arms to keep moving and the thought of blackout was very real. Funny or scary thing was I wasn't afraid of blacking out. The whole thing was very sureal and I think subconsciously I knew I was not diving but dreaming. I had another one recently that was not so pleasant. This one was more about surfing, some local punks and them getting attacked by a bunch of Tiger sharks. I'll save you all the details but it was pretty bloody.

My joke with the implying of gayness was ment for Jon, sorry about that.

Wow - A guy leaves for one bear hunt and a thread gost to hell.

Dan: my response was in NO WAY connected to yours - I respect everyones personal opinion and that's exactly what I was trying to get across - MY OPINION. No offence was intended.

in no way a flame/bash/put down/what ever you want to call it in reguards to another poster. again, it was a PERSONAL OPINION about how I FEEL about MY interactions with freediving.

EDIT: if people want to give me negitive Karma - would you please grow a pair of balls and sign it? funny - there doesn;t seem to be a "smilie" holding up the right digit.....

Smoothness 101

Ahem... clearing the throat smiley face icon...

This might be a good time to gather our selves for a little Thread Posting 101, folks. :hmm

There's a button down south of the screen that say's Preview When you're done with your diatribe, hit the button. What that does is show you that you can't spell for beans, and let's you take a minute to read what you wrote. It also lets you reflect on who you will be affecting with your words. Lots of peoples from lots of places reside here in DB land and not all have thick skin or an MBA degree. Lots of things are real special to people and even more of them have a difficult time conveying their thoughts. When you get a little tight in the crotch about somthing somebody said, take a minute and consider where that person(s) was coming from, and the fact that they may only be 12-13 yrs old and stopped off here on the way to the better Internet porn sites. :mute By just shooting from the hip with your takes as it were risks genuinely offending someone that is really entering here for a first time or has been wanting to but for whatever reason hasn't . A topic appears that they feel safe and strong about, they nut up and post and BAM!, and you get what we have here- a genuinely great thread topic turning into an apology fest.

Take a breath folks. Take your time here when tapping out your reply. There is more than enough ignorance out there as it is... let's keep it from here.

Ignorance is bliss

I honestly can't and wont consider if people will, or will not get offended by my posts. I could not imagine anything that would offend me personally. I just don't take my self that seriously.

I once heard a quote from someone: "Words are only soundwaves that travel through the air and hits your ear, they wont kill you"

Well to coin another phrase, "It ain't all about you". As Sven has just so rightly posted they's alot of backgrounds on these posts and therefore there needs to be a little consideration for different POV's. If you don't agree that's ok. But there should be some consideration for others.

I once dreamt I had an SWB. I was coming up from a dive and while looking at other divers ever so softly I just started to fade out, no panic, no bad feeling, just everything going black. I even had time to think about it. Can't remember if I woke up or not, might be dreaming that I'm writing this! ;)

About spirituality, it is really nice to see all the different backgrounds being expressed in the messages. Spirituality means so many things to so many different people, that ideally we should agree on a definition of what it means. To do that would be almost impossible as we base ourselves on the expriences each one of us has had, many of them so distinct from each other.

The variety of spiritual experiences also derive from an individual's capacity or openness at a particular moment and what level of Creation one percieves or expansion of consciousness one expriences. It's a huge field of experience out there/in there, and we are only scratching the surface.

The question here is if freediving is a spiritual technology. It obviously is for some. Could be that going into an alien environment where one has to be very alert, focused and in tune, creates a state of perception that goes beyond the "normal" and with our radar fully extended we tap into forces and energies usually not available in normal waking state consciousness but there always just waiting for us - just under the surface of our awareness and hovering within our intuition. Freediving can be opening these channels of perception giving us feelings of blissfulness, oneness with nature and/or just plain happieness.

So much more there, so many of God's gifts.

Adrian

Please allow me to add a few comments...

I think the first rule when using a forum is to try and remember that communicating through printed word can be extremely limited. Think about the fact that the person responding may be from a completely different culture, background, upbringing, and age group. Plus they may have had a crappy day or a good day. Can you hear the inflection in their comment (you can't), and if you could, would it mean what you think it means, if they don't use English as their primary language?
Knee-jerk reaction is not needed given the big time-lag in our conversations here. If you think someone's out of line, give them the benefit of the doubt and ask first. DB has a very good track record for having good communication, and I think everyone here wants to enjoy all the topics without offending. I have caught myself a few times feeling pissed off, but after pondering the possibilities of differences, made a few friends here.

We all share a love for the sea; a quest for something that is just around the corner. Or in our case, maybe under a ledge on a reef at 5 metres or 50 metres. Spirituality is what I look for down there (as well as other places), and I believe it's the same for many of you. A connection to something unseen;just out of sight... whether diving for a PB, hunting the right fish, or seeking a "pure immersion"....surely those acts are an analogy to the journey of life and searching for the Big Answer.
Faith is the centre-point of spirituality, and we must have faith to hold our breath and dive, no?
So call it what you want, try to paint a picture however you like, I will listen with eyes wide open to your stories of your quest, because I will meet you, my friends, at the end of the journey and we will laugh in the light of the One, diving into the infinite.
Cheers,
Erik Y.

Taking rash actions back

Hasty words may be difficult or impossible to take back, but some actions are (thankfully) reversible.

Dan and Amphibious got tons of bad karma for their "tiff". I don't know Amphibious, but I do know Dan and he is anything but preachy and intolerant -- in fact I dive with him and his post was the first hint that I had that he was a devout christian.

His "negative" post expressed understandable indignation and in the following post he had the grace to apologize and bite his tongue, even as a lot of harsh, undeserved criticism rolled in. This doesn't seem like a guy who deserves getting a ton of negative karma.

At any rate, I am hoping that those of you who threw stones at these two will re-think your actions. If you have some regrets, then you can cancel out the negative karma with some positives. The little blue squares don't really mean that much per se, but I know that Dan found the negative karma to be an extra (and in my opinion undeserved) insult .
